I have been working at Boston Scientific as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Very nice experience overall. They tend to be hands off once the trust is gained. The job was executed with minimum politics. good balance of high and low risk tasks to allow for a solid product development

    Cons

Like many large organizations decisions could be done a bit more promptly. The mix environment MS - SAP - Oracle will increase complexity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider to use cloud computing to gain more agility.

I worked at Boston Scientific full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent pay, excellent benefits - Before the company moved to Costa Rico the new management was weeding out the dead weight employees. It was exciting to work with the folks from Ireland. They provided fair evaluation, compensation and promotion - based on performance not culture.

    Cons

Boston Scientific sold out to the lowest bidder leaving 1800+ hard working South Floridians unemployed. Many of these folks had worked for Boston Scientific 20+ years. There is a only one way loyalty with this company.I hope to see a day in my life time that our elected government officials will charge rather than reward big business to operate out of the country. Every time I hear about unemployment in south Florida I think about Boston Scientific. The departure of Boston Scientific from south Florida was very disappointing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move the facility back to south Florida. Employ Americans. How many billions do you really need??

    Pros

    Pay, work conditions and benefits

    Cons

Boston scientific abandoned the US workers in Miami. They moved the facility to Costa Rico. Previous senior management made a bad investment in Guidant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We are suffering in the US. We need jobs. Don't contaminate the good name of Boston Scientific with greed. Bring Miami back. We need each other.

I worked at Boston Scientific as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Provides benefits to employees and studying opportunities, promotes growth through the company.

    Cons

Depends too much on their documentation system through personal follow up to complete documentation SOP compliance. Daily meetings place too much demand on quick fix individual work instead of joint / Kaizen type work groups.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Integrate TPS into manufacturing to allow improvements to flow .

    Pros

BSC makes products that help people and is a huge company with excellent benefits and fair wages, Hopefully they can maintain competitiveness and continue innovating.

    Cons

You really have to play politics and fight for recognition.not alot of reward or recognition at individual employee level

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize the individual employees, there is talent,Start treating people as individuals, not like faceless, undifferentiated cogs in the machine

    I worked at Boston Scientific

    Pros

Good place to work and develop
Good systems in place to drive lean production
Good Quality Systems and principle based manufacturing

    Cons

Looking to shrink on cost structure far more than increasing sales
Divesting Miami site to Costa Rica
Laid off all Miami employees effective 2012

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In general management was very engaged in the day to day and operated professionally. There are always sour grapes with a particular manager but we all have those -- its important to keep perspective; if the plant were still open many people would have worked there for a long time, even for life.

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Miami, FL

    I worked at Boston Scientific

    Pros

Opportunity to work on products and projects focused on improving people's lives.
Development of technical competence through extensive training, including process and product validation, six-sigma and lean.
Knowledgeable staff that can support your projects, if you know where to look (extremely important to build personal network).

    Cons

Lack of management training, even if individual does not have any people management experience.
Dictatorship style of management, generating results through intimidation and bullying.
HR department more focused on punishing staff for failing to meet requirements, rather than understanding the root cause for mediocre organizational performance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Although a significant amount of resources have been spent training employees to achieve technical competence, the same cannot be said for management development. This has lead to the revolving door of externally hired management that are unable to drive change in the organization due to their lack of credibility. Stop this practice by identifying and developing your internal talent. Otherwise, your talent flight will continue.
