    I worked at Boston Scientific

    Pros

Management is very knowledgeable and helpful. Has a Gym, Full service Cafe and you can walk a mile within the building on a cold day. People are encouraged to be healthy, Marker on the walls, tell you, how far have you walked.

    Cons

City is ARCTIC cold in winter!

I worked at Boston Scientific full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Fantastic cross functional opportunities in the early part of my career.

    Cons

Focus on people development and career development dwindled as the Guidant / BSC acquisition happened.
Culture was focused on results only, people were not the focus. Maintaining a healthy work life balance became very hard in many parts of the organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People are your asset, without them, the company does thrive. Invest in and focus on career development and developing your star talent. Also, helping your people manage a healthy work life balance is the key to satisfied, engaged, productive and creative employees!

    Pros

Very smart people on the marketing team, focused on success and personal growth and development

    Cons

Difficult merger between Guidant and BSC left Guidant technologies at a disadvantage. BSC management does not know how to manage the Rhythm Business, but is determined to be in "the driver seat." Also, BSC lacks history of true high tech innovation, in which Guidant has been a leader.

I have been working at Boston Scientific full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Boston Scientific seems to be headed in the right direction under the direction of Mike Mahoney. Once Mike joined there was a definite shift in strategy from cutting out SG&A and more of a focus on growing revenues. Overall fair work/life balance with spikes in hours around month end and annual budgeting.

    Cons

Limited career opportunities in my location. There have been several layoffs since I started working here, but those have seemed to slow down.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep growing the top line!

    Pros

Great benefit. In fact one of the highest matching for 401-k and a chance to earn decent bonus. Upward mobility is there for many positions. If you work in some of the business function areas, attitude is probably better.

    Cons

Like many other corporate peers, BosSci is not immune to demand more and more of their employee pool. The problem is that even though individual contributors and managers are asked to give it all, the reward is often not there during the annual review. You will get promoted but that will be the justification to work more and longer. Even you WYAO, you might get put into Improvement Needed category. People who has the passion of balancing their lives are often labeled as non-leadership material as they don't share the passion. The IT functions has a distinct feeling of being run like Accenture - devoid of any loyalty and compassion. Most projects are often run to meet some dates which in turn result into poor solutions and myriad of problems for others to handle, after they go live. More and more interns, college grads are being asked to contribute, which in turn leading to a high turn over at a very early age group in the corporate culture. Just look at any given moment, how many positions, this company is trying to hire. Directors and up will keep on passing the buck and are not accountable for a miserable landscape and completely detached from the reality. Bottom line, if you don't mind, giving it all for few years, then probably this is the place. But don't expect a family to wait around to share the outcome.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop being all about lip service.

I have been working at Boston Scientific full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The pay is pretty good and most of the people here are really top flight. It looks like the market has bottomed out and we maybe in for a real upswing in the CRM business.

    Cons

Lots of Layoffs, about one per year, typical office politics, power games and people not really taking ownership of problems. The CRM business has not done very well over the last 10 years or so--it's not just Boston CRM however, the entire pacemakers and other implantable cardiac device market has fallen on hard times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be realistic about the projections for the future, stop tell us we are going to jump over the moon. We might and if we do, let it be a surprise. When you predict great improvements and they don't materialize, you look less than great.

I worked at Boston Scientific full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The technical staff of BSC is top-notch. Their dedication and experience is comparable or exceeds that of other medical device companies.

    Cons

The current business environment within BSC is characterized by the continuing employment uncertainties. BSC is not an innovator from within. It is a company the simply purchases innovation from others and then applies its bundensome internal procedures to attempt to develop something for commercialization. This speaks volumes to the top-notch , dediated and experienced technical staff remaining at BSC.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stabilize the employment environment. Listen to your technical people and let them do their jobs. Do not hold the employment of current management sacred. It may be entirely possible that the current business problems encountered by BSC are the result of current management and not those targeted for lay-off.
