Pros
The benefits and tuition remission are great, and the atmosphere of a college campus is oftentimes a lot of fun.
Cons
From what I've seen, there is little to no chance to advance within some departments, especially since the hiring freeze in 2009.
Advice to Senior Management
Pay attention to all of the hard work that's happening around you, it seems as though management often loses sight of this.
Pros
Friendly coworkers, reasonably good pay, beautiful settings and easy to commute to, good technology management and competent human resources staff.
Cons
Difficult to advance within the university, preference often shown to those with an "in," financial management leaves a lot to be desired.
Advice to Senior Management
Please make the advancement process more meritocratic, to encourage people to work their hardest and show them that getting promoted doesn't just depend on who you know.
Pros
Great business model for distance education. Improved management. Good location. Pleasant, helpful colleagues. New senior positions created. Some opportunity to work from home. New management in Office of Distance Education is more attentive, responsive, organized and supportive.
Cons
Management was less flexible than needed for supporting a professionally educated, master's degree level staff.
Advice to Senior Management
Opportunities to advance and to work from home are highly valued by staff.
Pros
Location is great. Benefits and work schedule are great. Some smart people there.
Cons
I worked in Information Services. Projects moved tediously slow. Some smart people there, but the different subgroups didn't get along. Because the benefits are so great, though, you have some people still there long after they should have moved on.
Advice to Senior Management
BU doesn't train managers to be managers. Tell your manager you need training. Tell your manager to tell Robert Brown that managers need training.
Pros
Fun people ,relaxing yet challenging environment. Absolutely fantastic, fantastic continuing educational curriculum program mangement. Opportunities to teach classes as well as learn.
Cons
Boring at times due to a lack of patients and a general boring environment, being in a large gym with few people.
Advice to Senior Management
Bosses are great and the best I have ever worked for, if only bosses could be as good as the ones at this job.
Pros
Teh benefits are great, especially vactiona time and tuition remission. Depending on your job there can be flexibility in schedule
Cons
low pay, lots of red tape
Advice to Senior Management
Make it easier for people from within the university to advance
Pros
Employee benefits: tuition reimbursement, low healthcare, great perks, lots of time off.
Cons
Low pay, limited mobililty, working at the medical campus I found commuting to be a pain (no parking, public transportation isn't great either)
Advice to Senior Management
Difficult to asses as my position was grant funded and my specific supervisors were not affiliated with BU
Pros
Work with knowledge and inspiring peers. The atmosphere is upbeat and inspiring. Most professors are extremely nice and friendly.
Cons
As a engineering student, sometimes I find there are probably not enough seminars and conferences . Some professors are more focused on seeking funding instead of doing real research.
Advice to Senior Management
Improve the overall level of lectures.. There should be more active student groups and unions. Interdepartmental cooperation will also be a plus.
Pros
All you need is the right boss! Throughout the university there's all kinds of red tape to deal with, true, but if you're in the right office under the supervision of a good manager it doesn't matter. All of the red tape can go flying right out the window! Especially if you're working for a department that has a reasonable budget, which can depend a lot on the department chair and how smooth that person is in meetings. So if your department chair gets your department a good budget and you have a boss who can act like a real person you're all set.
Cons
Well, all of the red tape, like I mentioned above.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep doing what you're doing.
Pros
I stayed on at BU after my PhD as a Postdoc. It was a great, flexible place to be.
Cons
The school has only a so-so name among the top institutions, which makes it a little harder to move on to a good place. Worked out for me.
Advice to Senior Management
The BME department is a great place. The dynamics among the faculty members could be improved a little.
