    I worked at Bourns

    Pros

Accountability comes with authority, experience and ideas are valued, people are eager to contribute their experience and there is NO politics or backbiting

    Cons

Not a technology leader and reluctant to make investments, extremely conservative - not conducive to thinking big or out of the box

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cannot have growth without investment and a clear strategy. People responsible for strategy need to be relieved to a large extent from the tactical duties so company can have a clear direction.

I have been working at Bourns

    Pros

Many lifetime employees, most people willing to help, good benefits package compared to others, stable business

    Cons

Management would rather bring in new outside employees rather then promote from within. Even promotions rarely match a decent salary for the industry. The environment is strict, structured, shirt and tie, many tiers of management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The success of the company is the result of talent. You need to retain talented employees and reward them with raises on par with the industry and promotions rather then add another job hopper that will be gone in a year. With so many levels of management and structure, often talented employees are not recognized until they leave and there is a hole to fill.

    I worked at Bourns

    Pros

The pay was good - the only problem was that they closed the plant in Janesville a few years after opening

    Cons

Work is not challenging at all, the chances for advancement is quite low as the structure is quite horizontal in nature

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow employees the chance to do more R&D and take ownership of projects, and invest money in research and development

    Cons

Not to many opportunities to grow. Upper structure is to rigid. Management is not open minded. Not well organized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate better to all employees their philosophy. Give the example. Give more incentives to the people.

Out of Control - Systemic Problems

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at Bourns

    Pros

Bourns has good benefits - vacation, holidays, insurance, 401k match, profit sharing. Also a lot of potential with being private and no debt. The Bourns family has managed the company well for over 60 years.

    Cons

Training and personal development are not considered; only short term planning is in place. Senior management has made very poor decisions in staffing up for new programs and managing plant shutdowns. Company operates like a public company in that jobs are cut as soon as the bottom line is not in line with plan; unstable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make long term planning a priority. Don't make too many large changes at once. Give employees ability to rate their managers. Pay incentive bonuses for outstanding achievements.
