    Pros

    People really do come first.
    Great team working environment.

    Cons

    Senior management is in constant state of change. Doesn't appear to be a lot of stability in corporate senior management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Allow the local offices to operate as stand alone units. Most office have been very successful this way. Changing to this "virtual" vertical market structure doesn't make sense and will not work.

    Pros

    Many of the project employees are encouraging and appreciative of good work.

    Cons

    The NY HR department is ill-qualified and determined to keep qualified individuals from learning, growing and advancing. They have been known to single people out and project their insecurities on employees they deem threatening.

    Try better to understand the strengths of your employees and foster opportunities for growth within those strengths.

    Pros

    The ability to try different roles, if you are up for a challenge. Friendly people all round. Strong focus on safety.
    As it is a multinational, opportunities to relocate to different offices eg Dubai, Sydney
    Strong backlog of work means different types of construction projects are available. If you have a sustainability focus, Bovis Lend Lease has a strong sustainability department.

    Cons

    There is a "we don't do it like this in New York" mentality which affects the ability of changes to filter through in their largest office.
    In New York, the cubicles are still in the old-style "high partitions", making the working environment feeling like a maze and not conducive to collaboration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Focus back on the basics now that 130 Liberty is resolved.

    Learning Opportunities and great coworkers

    Cons

    Disorganized leadership and backwards employee retention where the last employee hired is the first to be let go regardless of their performance. We have had mutiple 5 and 6 figure expenditures (employee recognition, Christmas party) over the last few months that could have been avoided in order to allow more people to retain their positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Trim the DEAD weight not the PRODUCTIVE weight. Do not terminate positions base on who is least likely to sue. When the economy does pick back up, it would help if there were some smart young poeple left to help get back to #1.

    Pros

    The compensation from what I can tell is superior to most companies in this industry. The company is also aggressive about obtaining a continual supply of work. That provides a level of security to the employee. While there are isolated instances when an employee is let go generally good performance is rewarded with continued service. The company is keen on retention of good people and will make all reasonable attempts to assign an employee to a psoition even if it does not match that employee's usual job description. Once a job materializes a re assignment is made. There are many corporate systems in place to help the employee with its work and to help the employee develop with training. These do help to some degree with moving up in the company.

    Cons

    There is quite a bit of pressure to perform. It is this industry that creates the pressure and as a result much time needs to be dedicated to work. This business sometimes feels like you have a tiger by the tail. There is quite a bit of work to do and not always enough time to get it done. Unfortunately, we are not always given the necessary resources to accomplish the tasks we need to. Bovis has been unable to fully staff all of its projects with totally qualified people in the recent uptick in work in this east coast market place. Because of that it has placed greater burdens on those competent individuals to ensure that their projects are run properly.

    Focus more on ways to reduce employee stress.

    Pros

    Massive company, can get flexibility if you know the right people, tends to be quite friendly. Good safety focus

    Cons

    As with all corporate organisations, its very big and the machiavellian types will always get their way. IF you know the right people and can talk your way, you'll go where you want. Sometimes there is a bit of a old boys culture as with all other big comanies. Career development may be limited depending on who you know. Quite beauracratic as typical of top tiers.

    Pros

    I worked on a large project in a project and construction management team. Given lots of responsibility which allows for rapid growth. They have some very experienced people and good processes and systems which makes learning great. Good variety of projects and access to large projects.

    Cons

    Quiet a lot of internal politics. Could see that between the key players a lot of politics. Stressful working environment (on this project) with high staff turnover meant sometimes didn't enjoy going to work.

    More team building required.

    strong structure and lots of project opportunities
    good people and good training
    strong "just get on with it" work ethic

    Cons

    long hours, competition for promotion makes it hard
    need to follow the projects and be flexible
    hard to get recognition sometimes
    lots of management direction and less autonomy than some others

    Pros

    quick step into Project Management roles, (even without much experience)

    Cons

    - Blame culture
    - Nepotism was rife when I was there
    - Don't care much about individual career development / training of employees
    - No appreciation or opportunities to learn for any technical (e.g: Engineers etc) personals
    - lot of middle management only interested in solely self interest / progression i.e. no mentoring or leadership for juniors
    - hard to get raise and promotion without playing corporate politics or threatening to leave

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - listen to the junior people more
    - Pay market rates to graduates
    - encourage good work ethic and proper rewards

    Invest in professional development for mid-level and senior management - target people management skills, communication skills, wholistic approach to project management and risk management.
