Please tell me that Dave Shea will not be the CEO of the RRD/Bowne merger

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) New York, NY

ProsAmple vacation. Nice co-workers. Salary + Overtime.

ConsAbusive salespeople. Inaccessible management. Ill-defined career paths. Most positions are filled externally instead of promoted from within. No training.

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote from within. Reinstate profit sharing and 401K match. Properly train employees in new technologies. Define career paths. Engage employees.

    Sincerely a terrible environment.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) New York, NY

ProsSome of the most incredibly hard working people on the worker-bee level.

ConsPay is way lower than other equivalent workplaces; Human Resources rules the roost, and unfortunately they are highly disconnected to the frontlines

Advice to Senior ManagementSell it for the shareholders. Oh, that's right - you've done that already, ha!

    Bowne

Technical Support/Trainer (Former Employee) Dallas, TX

ProsGood pay, vacation time off, support, pay raises, working conditions

Conslittle attention to detail, never given appreciation, supervision only pushers, lack of support, only they know all the answers, pay little or no attention to employee input.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook at the people who know, not the supervisor who only knows how to push people. Listen to those who do the job not the ones who oversee the job.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Too Bad...

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Boston, MA

ProsFree coffee and parking. Decent salaries. Casual and friendly work atmosphere.

ConsAloof, uninvolved, detached management that has (had) no idea of core service and product or the abilities of employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou're running a manufacturing operation, not a hotel and spa.

Fun place to work, low compensation

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) New York, NY

ProsEnjoyed working at Bowne, but it was a while before I figured out that there was no real way to get a job promotion.

    ConsNo way to advance.
    Low salaries.
Very fraternal - if you're not part of the IN group - good luck.

Advice to Senior Managementcreate a pipeline to advance high achievers - all the good people leave within 2-3 years.

    old-school management

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Mineola, NY

Prosstrong subject matter expertise in certain business areas with technical competencies that complement the SME. Well known among important client base,

ConsExcessive overhead is allocated to status reporting -- Management tasks should be re-focused on project deliverables. Agile practices have low acceptance.

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove competencies of entry level personnel with formal training. Adopt agile / scrum practices.

Bowne, Bend Over Weekends Nights and Evenings

IT Field (Former Employee) New York, NY

ProsBenefits Package on par with surrounding area. Senior Management available and listens.

ConsNo respect for personal life/time. Middle management could not be more clueless as how to deal with people. Sr. Management only hires middle management staff that will do whatever they are told. Outsource their entire Local and Global IT department. Minimal layoff packages given to employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementGood Luck working with outsourced IT companies.

Incompetent, self serving middle management that completely ignores company policies.

Press Operator (Former Employee) Toronto, ON (Canada)

    Pros-Mostly good people
    -competitive salary
    -clean and pleasant work environment

    Cons-incompetent management
    -heavy favoritism throughout departments
-unfair advancement (don't always post available jobs )
    -seniority counts for nothing
    -untruthful management

Advice to Senior Management-Head Office (N.Y.) should be doing major investigating of the way company policies and employees are being handled in Toronto.

    Good company bad site.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Detroit, MI

ProsBowne provides its employers with decent compensation without degrees.

ConsEverything else could definately be improved upon. Bowne of Detroit is poorly managed. With its biased promotional system, Bowne of Detroit break employee morale. Even if employees do take a step and complain, they are confronted with ineffective human resource personel.

In the composition area, employees are treated like children with assigned sitting being changed at the whims of middle management without rhyme or reason. Once again, when complaints are made reagarding these policies, nothing is done.

Every precaution is made to make sure that people are reminded that they can be replaced at any time for any reason. With 20% of Michigan's work force unemployed people feel trapped and it shows in their work and attitudes.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay closer attention to what is going on at the sites. Likibility does not equal competence. If you're going to pay 30,000-40,000 dollars to educate someone, don't let it walk out of the door.

    Wasted years

Vice President (Former Employee) Atlanta, GA

ProsThe best reason to work at Bowne was it had a good reputation. It was the oldest company on the American Stock Exchange and one of the oldest in the country having been founded by Robert Bowne in 1775.

ConsNumerous. Disastrous leadership, poor coordination between branches, poor cooperation between branches, afraid to commit to new technology which ultimately killed the company. They were selling buggy whips.

Advice to Senior ManagementGo find a new job because you ran the company into the ground.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
