I worked at Bowne full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The best reason to work at Bowne was it had a good reputation. It was the oldest company on the American Stock Exchange and one of the oldest in the country having been founded by Robert Bowne in 1775.

    Cons

Numerous. Disastrous leadership, poor coordination between branches, poor cooperation between branches, afraid to commit to new technology which ultimately killed the company. They were selling buggy whips.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go find a new job because you ran the company into the ground.

I worked at Bowne full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Fast paced environment during proxy and filing season. IPOs, M&A documents you could sense the importance of them. Work with high level customers - attorneys, CXOs, investment bankers.

Family environment, made some good friends. Some good mentors for me at the time were there.

    Cons

Not much room to grow and increase salary. Slow to change, they do printing after all, fading medium..

I worked at Bowne full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good pay, vacation time off, support, pay raises, working conditions

    Cons

little attention to detail, never given appreciation, supervision only pushers, lack of support, only they know all the answers, pay little or no attention to employee input.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at the people who know, not the supervisor who only knows how to push people. Listen to those who do the job not the ones who oversee the job.

    Pros

Excellent benefits, friendly atmosphere, business loyal to employees.

    Cons

Divisional bonuses tied to overal corporate profitability - other divisions dragged down profitiability of parent, impact our profitable business nearly every year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Bowne full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Family-type culture. One of the most open and welcoming work environments I've ever experienced. Invested significantly in leadership development, to the benefit of its employees.

    Cons

Now defunct. This company was sales-driven to a fault. Struggled mightily to keep up with changes in the marketplace because of entrenched interests determined to maintain the status quo.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A little less greed, a little more conscience, would suit leaders better.

    I worked at Bowne

    Pros

Casual work environment, collegial, learning opportunities

    Cons

pay was pretty low, and raises were borderline offensive, esp. when receiving above average performance reviews...If you're too good at what you do, it's hard to get them to let you try and move up within the org.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Nothing to say, the place was sold. Hope you enjoyed your fat paychecks after the sale to RRD, no one left is enjoying the transition.

    I worked at Bowne

    Pros

Some of the people there are good people and some are not great but the ones that are good really help you. Great job for someone starting out.

    Cons

No effort to help people work out their schedules and they just fire you if you can't do it theyre way even if you had kids not saying I do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Well the company is gone now so I guess I hope the managers can learn to respect people as people in theyre new jobs.

    I worked at Bowne

    Pros

Good pay, good benefits, employees treated well. small company feel

Overall, I had a positive experience with the company, wish they weren't acquired

    Cons

Politics, Management did not always recognize and deal with issues of poor performance. Towards the end of the company there were a lot of cut backs and layoffs which lead to a decline in employee morale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Because the company is now owned by RR Donnelly, there is really not a whole lot to say. I wish them well

    I worked at Bowne

    Pros

Great corporate culture. People actually interested in helping each other, no vicious back-stabbing politics. Overall competence of almost all employees. Low turnover. One of the best corporate experiences I've had.

    Cons

Somethings overly bureaucratic and slow to change. Takeover by RRD. Having worked at both is it a shame that the unpleasant corporate culture of RRD will destroy Bowne's.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The sellout of employees by the senior management to line their own pockets and then to abandon ship is beyond contempt. Oldest public company in the US destroyed for stock options.
