Pros
Retirement is good, Get used to working weekends, can be rewarding working with volunteers. Money Manpower, Learn these and you will do well.
Cons
Long Hours, Must be on top of scheduling time off, don't wait until the last minute. You will deal with a lot of people who may be dissatisfied with how you are doing from both management and volunteers even though you are meeting your goals.
Advice to Senior Management
concentrate on retention of kids in the program, NOT on creating new units, if you do this the program will be much better.
Pros
You are totally responsible for your successes and failures.
Cons
Work schedule requires many nights and weekends.
Pros
Making a small difference in a community is very rewarding. Interaction with the kids is worth the time and effort.
Cons
Numbers driven organization that is more focused on profit than programming.
Advice to Senior Management
NA
Pros
Invaluable job skills (networking, leadership, hard work, commitment)
Minor failures are expected (learning experience)
Great opportunity for customer experience
Cons
Not always the greatest management and high turn over rate based on young workers (high school level)
Advice to Senior Management
Better Communication and feedback with new councilors.
Pros
Excellent benefits package. Usually off for all major holidays. A lot of great volunteers, youth, and
professionals to work with! A lot of good training at all levels. The mission and core values are
second to none!! Their is a lot of variety in the job. Pay Scale is reasonable.
Cons
Way to many rules and regulations. Paper work is second only to the U.S. government! American
Society has become to sports obsessed, to busy and hectic for youth and adults a like, and to
selfish to support a non-profit organizations with long term objectives like the B.S.A.
Top management at National and Local councils, expect way to much from the professional in the
field and the adult volunteers. Due to the ever expanding complexity and over regulated organization
the B.S.A. is gradually shrinking in size and number. The B.S.A. is to corporate in its management
and is to goal driven and numbers obsessed and basically unkind to front line professional staff in what they ask of them! The very long hours of work needed to accomplish the goals, all lead to a
unbalanced work to home life balance. This organization gives a whole new meaning to very
extreme multi-tasking! Despite all this, I still love scouting and wish I could have been able to
improve the organization more myself. We all have to assume responsibility
for what this institution could have been, if we had made better choices! Never the less, their is
always hope and prayer for a better tomorrow.
Advice to Senior Management
In my opinion, the Boy Scouts of America, needs to do the following: work hard to make the
organization simpler, get rid of all the over regulation, make the whole membership registration
process easier for the volunteer and professional, ease up on all the goals, be kinder in approach
and attitude to the volunteers and front line district executives! Finally, make every effort to bring the
joy, fun, and heart back to the B.S.A., so that youth and adults a like will be begging to join this
wonderful organization that was started a little over a 100 years ago!
Pros
Good benefits package, and retirement package.
Cons
Very long hours, not enough time off for family.
Pros
Very positive oriented environment that really encourages it employees in many ways, primarily personal growth. Amazing and enthusiastic people and "customers".
Cons
Honestly, I do not really have many. Possibly not having some solid time off, but that is just the way the schedule works.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep up the amazing work!! I had a blast working out at the Ranch and would recommend it to others as well.
Pros
The salary and room for advancement are there but you won't be staying at one council for very long. Clearly defined hierarchy makes things easy to navigate up and down the ladder
Cons
Personnel and employee turnover is ludicrously high, not many benefits, late hours almost every night of the week and weekend hours, performance is very easily monitored and almost exclusively driven by numbers
Advice to Senior Management
For the work that is done and required the benefits are not quite enough, perhaps figure out a new benefits system and some better incentives for performing well.
Pros
Always something to do on weekends; great benefits package; for professional positions there are educational opportunities; each day is unique
Cons
Support staff doesn't get much recognition; few opportunities for advancement for the support staff; not an amazing salary for such an important position
Advice to Senior Management
Make your support staff feel like they are an integral part of the organization. Give them recognition and quarterly feedback. Don't let them be content to sit around as registrar for 20 years.
Pros
High flexibility and opportunity to grow and to establish connections with new important people. Job that helps kids become better citizens.
Cons
I did not have any negative experience so far with this company since I started working. The only little downside is that sometimes I have meetings late or very early.
Advice to Senior Management
I think that this company is a great place to work. I enjoy the opportunity to work with great people and to make this country better place.
