Chicago, IL

Former Employee – worked at Boy Scouts of America full-time for more than 3 years

ProsOk for an entry level job. Good benefits. Gives you a true look at the harsh realities of the real world.

ConsThey don’t care for your personal time. Long and ridiculous hours, including working on Sundays. Yes, Sundays. Poor opportunities for advancement. Awful upper management. Only care about raising money to pay bills. Could care less about the values of the program itself.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to inspire your staff by showing that you actually care about the Scouting rather than just the numbers.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Greeley, CO

Former Employee – worked at Boy Scouts of America full-time for more than a year

ProsScouting is a fantastic program that brings families together and helps youth develop their skills and interest. Executives get good exposure to many different aspects of society and opportunities to develop many skills. Some councils are better than others.

ConsComplete disregard for work-life balance and executive's personal development. Fraudulent pursuit of goals (especially membership) are often encouraged by management. 60-80 hours per week at very low pay are the norm. Group-think mentality keeps getting the organization in trouble. Lacks innovation.

Advice to Senior ManagementRespect executives like partners rather than slaves.

ProsYou have an opportunity to work with dedicated volunteers and make a difference in your community. The various job duties you have, give you great experience working with different people. You fundraise, work with an executive board of volunteers, public speak and run events in your community. Great training program.

ConsThe job duties and expectations can be overwhelming at times. Not a great work life balance.

Advice to Senior ManagementStaff at the bottom need to be treated with respect if you want employees to stay in their postions.
