    Pros

I absoltuley love the kids I work with and the fact that I am contributing to positive changes in my own community. Many of my co-workers and I are so passionate about what we do and truely want what's best for the kids and to see positive change within our community. This is a place I plan to volunteer at once I move on to my permanent career.

    Cons

Budget makes it hard to retain passionate staff who really know what they are doing and how to better the club. Hours are cut at random and staff are viewed as replacable to management, making it an unreliable job to count on for a steady paycheck. They'll let an amazing staff member walk out the door to hire a so-so less educated person who will do the job for less. More is always expected from employees for less, if you're salaried you generally put in 80 hour weeks, if you're part-time paid 20 hours a week you may have to "volunteer" to work an additinal 20 hours at your cost to get your job done to management standards.

    Advice to Management

I wouldn't exactly say "pay employees more", because I understand it's a non-profit orginization and we are all in this for the kids and the community. But more full-time employees being hired and treating them fairly would be beneficial. E.g. Having more designated full-time salaried employees working 40-50 hour weeks rather than forcing 80 hours and part-timers working 40. It's impossible to expect all the work and programming to get done with only 2-3 full-time directors, and they should't be expected to get done what would realistically take 7 people to do. This leads to quick burnout on all staff, frustration, confusion, and low quality programs which could easily be superior. The club has so much potential for the community but its biggest roadblocks are itself.

    Pros

The organization has resources available for their center staff. Great training for teenagers in work experience and college prep as well.

    Cons

Limited resources sometimes - short hours at times

    Advice to Management

Listen to your staff and support them - everything else will fall in place!

Enjoyed working with the kids and fellow staff, but upper management was just not connected with the day to day.

    Pros

You really get great opportunities to change kids' lives.

    Cons

It's all about 'programming' and it really doesn't matter if it's done, the paperwork just has to be done. It would be great to interact more with donors and allow donors to actually see the kids. It would also be great to have some input in programming and allow the kids to rate their experience.

    Advice to Management

Take more time listening to us who actually work with the kids. Times change so quickly now. We had some fantastic staff, but our trainings consisted of people who worked in the club 20 years ago. Tap into the current staff and then reward those who truly care about the kids.

    Pros

The biggest "Pro" is the relationship with the kids. I enjoyed getting to know to them throughout my time there.

The managers and directors were incredibly nice people who genuinely wanted to provide a great place for the kids with learning and fun activities.

    Cons

We weren't heavily trained. We mostly had to use applied skills from other areas of life and be able to use our common sense.

Unstable structure- We had to work out the kinks as we went along.

    Kids are LOUD!

    Advice to Management

One director personally sent out letters to all of our volunteers- thanking them for their service. Keep up things like that.

Provide detailed information for employees and volunteers of what to do and what not to do..

Provide information for how to handle children at their best & worst and information on how to handle parents. Sometimes the parents were more childish than the kids.

    Cons

Needs a professional management overall especially in Administration current president does not have the workers best interest at heart. Not enough training for staff.

    Advice to Management

    Pros

    Excellent benefits package. Cool coworkers.

    Cons

No raises ever, I mean never. Giant workload and tons of responsibility for low pay. Constant fear of layoffs due to budget issues. Very high turnover rate.

    Advice to Management

Compensate employees adequately and they will stick around longer. Or assign an appropriate work load for the pay scale.

    Pros

You learn something new every day. The administrative staff and the CEO of the organization work really hard to make sure you get the training you need to be effective in your position. They also promote from within. If you have the skills and talent and wish to grow with the organization then you are given the opportunity to do so.

    Cons

One challenge would be the pay/salary. Since it is a non profit organization, they rely on donors to give funding.

    Advice to Management

Management should work on ensuring that employees are following all the rules and guidelines that have been set for the organization.
