Great kids you get really attached to these kids you want to find different ways of helping them. Had a good experience in this aspect. Set hours Monday- Friday. Great for experience

    Cons

Very disorganized upper management, often worked with little resources because site received very little funding, site supervisors were great. Don't expect promotion for at least 5 years

So much positive energy from the staff! Great strength in leadership and is truly a team environment with everyone working together. The kids are wonderful and even if you are having a bad day, you walk into the club and it all changes.

    Cons

I worked at Boys & Girls Clubs part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Pay is decent for part-time, great job for college students as it is usually 3PM-8PM, and the work is overall easy

    Cons

The kids are usually low- income :(, no upward mobility

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give your part timers holiday pay, with an already low salary, you have to save the whole year to compensate for the loss of time during the holiday season.

I worked at Boys & Girls Clubs part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

-great for those trying to get into the youth development field.
-can have the opportunity to positively impact the lives of youth who need it.

    Cons

-toxic work culture that emphasizes over-work with little compensation or support.
-lack of clear goals or strategic plans.
    - willingness to fudge data to make it appear as if the organization is doing more.
-high adult:child ratio which leads to several behavioral issues.
-minimal opportunities for advancement or professional development.
-upper management with little concern for how things work on the ground.
-both staff and programs are underfunded. Staff are expected to do a lot with little time, resources or back up support.
    -clique-y, manipulative management.
-"jack of all trades, master of none."
    -burn-out factory.

I have been working at Boys & Girls Clubs part-time for less than a year

    Pros

The best reason to work here is when you arrive at work, there are many smiling faces happy to see you. Working with children is such an incredible experience. It feels like a blessing to know so many unique personalities.

It's a great starting point for a career working with children. If you're in college seeking part-time work, this would be a satisfactory place to work.

    Cons

It's part-time. Each club has only four full-time employees. I felt like I was being taken advantage of because if I wanted more hours, I had to be willing to stay late or work weekends but my weekly hours could never go over 29.5.

As an activity leader, you're forced to do an immense amount of work in a short period of time. I was often stuck with 30+ kids and no additional staff members to help me. This made it extremely difficult to implement an activity or a game if there was an injury or if a child was having behavior issues. In those situations, you either have to stick your head out the door and yell for help or hope that another staff member wanders through your room.

At my particular club, we never had supplies. Often I would have to buy anything I needed to be successful at the club and I was never reimbursed. It's damn near impossible to be an art teacher when all you have are dried out markers, donated fabric swatches and a bunch of other useless crap. My mom donated 30 small boxes of crayons, but many of them were jacked by my co-workers, who were suffering as well. Sometimes we didn't even have enough chairs.

Discipline is a joke. Write-ups, parent conferences, and 1 or 2 day suspensions were all that would happen. I've never seen someone kicked out of the club and I've had a chair thrown at me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow activity leaders to manage the budget for their area (gym, art room, games room, or learning center). That way they can plan inexpensive activities according to how much money they are allotted. Hire more staff!
