I worked at Boys & Girls Clubs part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Work with kids, interact with a diverse group of people every day.

    Cons

Horrible drama among adult workers and teen workers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Watch workers more closely and do more than just see the person willing to work in front of you and hire them.

I have been working at Boys & Girls Clubs as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

I had an opportunity to meet and play with some really good kids

    Cons

I was not given the opportunity that I was presented upon hire. No tools were provided to teach, no space to teach, no time to teach. On site management had no knowledge of why I was there or the program that I was there to implement. Nobody ever followed up with me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follow up with your interns once they are on site. They are supposed to have a mentor. Otherwise you are ruining an important part of their college experience as well as taking away from other potential opportunities. Really disappointing experience!

I worked at Boys & Girls Clubs as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Working with such amazing kids and helping them to make positive decisions for their future made me absolutely love my internship here!! I really felt that I was helping with the youth and community surround it. The relationships that are made with the co-workers and children is so rewarding!

    Cons

I would say that this job is definitely for someone who is really wanting to help out for the cause of what the company offers, if you are looking to make a lot of money - this isn't the right place for you.

I have been working at Boys & Girls Clubs full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The mission & vision of the organization are amazing and the idea of helping great futures start here is great. The BGCA core values are ones that everyone should live by everyday and being around smiling faces that you indirectly and directly impact is very rewarding.

    Cons

The leadership needs work. There is an "unspoken" issue with favoritism and cliques that everybody complains about but nobody has the courage to change it. There is very little opportunity for growth in the organization unless you have the right friends in your corner. The organization is filled with emotionally immature employees that would rather sit and gossip than to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leadership training, employee professional development is also needed.

A great place to get experience working with youth if you're heart is in it.

I have been working at Boys & Girls Clubs full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of interactions with youth, field trips, involvement in the community, casual dress. The kids are the best part, building relationships with them and seeing them grow is the biggest perk.

    Cons

Demanding schedule, emotionally tiring, low pay. It's not a high-paying job whatsoever, especially for the work you put in. The reward is not monetary. Some administrative staff is difficult to work with because they don't seem to understand how much they ask of the staff at their clubhouses and leave them feel vastly underappeciated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I wish the administrative staff treated their employees more fairly, both monetarily and morally. They expect a lot, they do not understand what it's like to work at the clubhouse level.

    Pros

Great kids you get really attached to these kids you want to find different ways of helping them. Had a good experience in this aspect. Set hours Monday- Friday. Great for experience

    Cons

Very disorganized upper management, often worked with little resources because site received very little funding, site supervisors were great. Don't expect promotion for at least 5 years
