I have been working at Brevard County Public Schools

    Pros

The best thing about being a substitute teacher is the ability to accept when and where you want to work.

    Cons

The greatest challenge of being a substitute teacher is the common disrespect from both full-time teachers and students. We are often viewed as 'baby-sitters' instead of educators. Honestly, we can do more than play a movie.

    Advice to Management

The preparation of a substitute teacher folder is most helpful especially when it contains seating charts or specific notes relative to each class.

    Pros

Guaranteed holidays and summers off as well as great health benefits.

    Cons

The paperwork is tremendous and not enough time during working hours to complete it, thus having to bring work home on a nighty basis. No raises and don't expect to get a contract for the current school year until the end of that school year. The teacher's union needs to step it up a notch.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees fairly and with respect.

There is no money in eduction and limited mo kitty. Especially in Florida schools. There should be a pay in crease to create a better moral with educators

    Advice to Management

Stop hogging all the mula. We have bills too. Make the job worth doing. We love the kids but can barely make ends meet. I know this is more legislate that local but whateves.

    Pros

It's great to live near the ocean, NASA and Orlando.

    Cons

Everyone is overworked and underpaid. There simply aren't enough hours in the day to do all that you are asked to do. Moral is low. It's not what you know, it's who you know. You must network if you want to get ahead.

    Advice to Management

Ease up on some of the paperwork, accountability, and especially the professional growth plan! Let's get back to the fundamentals of teaching and start treating teachers with the respect and professionalism they deserve. If you can't raise the salary to a competitive level, bring back some of the perks of teaching!

    Pros

    Love working with the children.

    Cons

Way too much to do. You can't accomplish everything that is expected even with staying late and working on the weekends. Also, unless you have a "professional contract" (tenure), teachers (even highly effective teachers) are laid off every year and BPS hires from the outside without any regard to loyal employees. I know teachers that have had their homes foreclosed on due to this. It is common practice.

    Advice to Management

    Treat you teachers like people.
