I worked at Briggs Equipment full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The mother company (Sammons) provides financial support, but Briggs' culture supports only a few of it's management personnel - everyone else is cannon fodder.

    Cons

See above "pro's"... that's about as good as it gets.
Use your imagination how bad it can be (Con's).

At some point, this company is going to have to change its philosophy...

Or not... and watch great talent abandon them.

I have been working at Briggs Equipment full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

ESOP - The company is "owned" by the employees, and once you are vested after 3 years you get a percentage of your income put into your ESOP account for retirement. Right now it's at a mandatory 25%, but typically varies on the yearly profitability of the company and Sammons Corporation as a whole.

Most of the People - I work on the Dallas Campus which is made up of a Parts Call Center, Dallas Industrial Branch, Dallas Construction-Aerial Branch, Service Support Group, & Corporate Office. There are a lot of genuinely good people that make up the lower level or regular employees.

    Cons

ESOP and Pay - The ESOP is good, but the way that management constantly hangs it over your head like they are the only company that has some sort of stock or profit sharing program goes overboard. They also use ESOP as justification for paying many employees below market rate and not giving them raises.

ESOP % Allocation - They always talked excitedly and anxiously for Mrs. Sammons to pass away so that the mandatory 25% ESOP allocation would kick in. Then as soon as she died and upper management openly rejoiced and celebrated, they immediately began working on a plan to reduce the ESOP percentage.

Women - A very male driven business at the branch level. The girls that work here and used to work here are regularly made to feel uncomfortable as guys make inappropriate advances and comments towards them. They are also given no chance to be promoted at the branch as management is a Men Only club.

Good 'Ol Boys Club - Briggs is the ultimate good 'ol boys club, managers hire best friends and managers cover for their shortcomings and if someone raises a concern, no matter how minor, about someone with an upper management friend or ally, then that person is forever marked and usually written up for expressing a concern.

Management Working - While a few of the managers work hard, others do very little to no actual work, instead delegating it out to their subordinates and playing on the internet. There are multiple managers, particularly in the branch, that sit there and surf the web all day on their computer or phone and don't really hide it as everyone here knows they are on Facebook, ESPN, Craigslist, Ebay, GQ, etc. It's an open joke amongst us that certain people literally do no real work, and only remain employed because of who their friend is or because they suck up and play the political game very well.

When they want to terminate an employee, they begin writing them up for any little thing they can, including actions that they encouraged them to do previously, or overlook other employees doing the same thing. This is all done so that they can deny unemployment benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open your eyes to the people who are really working and not playing on the internet all day. Communicate better with us that are not in the "management circle" or Good 'Ol Boys Club about what changes being made instead of us finding out when we are doing something wrong. Don't keep talented people in the same position and not give them advancement opportunities just because they are valuable in that spot and you dont want to try and replace them.

    Pros

Absolutely no pros to working for this company. Don't walk, run away from this company if ever offered a job with them. The only positive to working here is banding together with other employees to find better jobs. Also the other "great" reviews on this website are done by 1 member of the HR team. They also lobby to get real reviews like this one taken down.

    Cons

Everything. Mainly the management team. There is no leadership or vision with the management from MW on down to the VP's. They are good at making spreadsheets but not implementing strategic plans. You are not seen as an asset when you work here, merely a piece of meat that better be producing by their out of touch standards. Take a look around the east region, they can't find anyone to work for them (solely because of the VP!!!). Their techs, sales folks, and even management are going to work for the Toyota or Yale dealers at a breakneck pace. The only people leaving faster than their own employees are their customers! Work family balance? Nope-more like you better be sending emails and answering/making calls 24/7.Don't take my word for it, go for an interview and ask to do a ride along with a tech for a day, get them away from the "leadership" and then really pick their brain! Ask to see their market share numbers for the past 3 years, or how many employees they had 2 years ago compared to right now. Their ESOP program is going away no matter what management says, it's currently not sustainable with as much money as they are losing.

I have been working at Briggs Equipment

    Pros

Benefits at Briggs are extraordinary. This is a very paternalistic company that goes above and beyond to make sure employees have the best overall compensation package especially for the long-term. The retirement benefits are unparalleled in the industry, in fact they are unparalleled compared to almost any industry. Briggs is part of Sammons Enterprises, one of the largest and most successful employee-owned companies in the world.

    Cons

The industry we are in is not perceived to be very glamorous so it is a challenge to attract the best and brightest employees. Once they do discover Briggs, they realize what an incredible company and industry we are in. It is difficult to get into Briggs and turnover tends to be very low which translates into a few opportunities for outsiders to join the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to promote the company and offer opportunities for people to discover what we do and what makes us special. Creating an apprentice program for maintenance mechanics would allow the company to groom new talent to replace employees who are scheduled to retire within the next few years.
