I worked at Brigham Young University (BYU) part-time

    Pros

I loved how everyone was helpful and understanding to each other as staff and were patient and helped explain things if need be. Raise every semester.

    Cons

You have to be a student to work here and not allowed to work more than part time in most positions.

    Pros

Leadership opportunities abound within the Writing Fellows program. Professional development sessions are useful and add to your tutoring toolkit.

    Cons

Compensation is less than satisfactory. BYU admin can be a bit stifling when it comes to culture.

I worked at Brigham Young University (BYU) part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I had a great manager who was very understanding the needs of a student employee. Worked with good people and felt like I contributed to the success of the university.

    Cons

Pay is average and was not always the most fulfilling as you did the same thing every night.

I have been working at Brigham Young University (BYU) part-time for less than a year

    Pros

BYU is a good institution to work for. There is never "layoffs" in student jobs unless someone is failing to perform. Managers tend to be good natured people who genuinely care about you and your life.

    Cons

Pay is fairly low, which is expected for part-time employment on a university campus. BYU is very conservative, so that affects policy from time to time in ways that may not make sense or are simply ineffective.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try not to make things political.

I worked at Brigham Young University (BYU) full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I loved being able to run my own research team. The things I learned and the experience I gained are serving me well. Not all positions will be this way, but there was enough flexibility that I could take some of my work home and actually use my most productive time (late evening) while freeing up some daytime. I found myself sad to leave, knowing that my new employer was much different, but the time I spent there was good.

    Cons

Students can create a lot of turnover, while there are some people who have been there since the dawn of time that you may need to contend with. Pay was moderately dismal, even for my level. It's hard to keep employees engaged when they're not getting enough compensation - the ones who are really great are the ones that see some kind of purpose in their work there. Bureaucracy was a bit much (that's coming from a current federal employee).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tone down the culture of encouraging sacrifice of time, pay, etc. having the opportunity to work for the BYU cause. There's some truth in that idea, but there's also plain reality of needing decent pay and having enough time off.

I worked at Brigham Young University (BYU) part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

So much fun! A great environment. The professor was amazing to work with. I learned so much doing research with the psychology team! The grad students were awesome as well. It was great to see some of the amazing research that is going on at BYU and to be a part of it!

    Cons

The compensation was pretty good. There isn't really any room for promotions because the graduate students are usually the ones running the show, but as an undergrad you expect that.

    Pros

Awesome Coworkers, hours are really flexible for most jobs. My boss is awesome and gives great advice.

    Cons

keeping track of your hours with y-time is annoying because the program is buggy, but my boss was always nice about doing manual time card changes

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be great if Y-time were improved, its buggy and drops punches sometimes.
