I have been working at Brightcove full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

After doing startups, working at large Company with great benefits, good pay, not being expected to work ridiculous hours and weekends, it's felt down right cozy. Brightcove while a more mature Company still takes chances and uses the latest tech appropriate to the situation, even when it means throwing work away to get to a more agile product work flow.

    Cons

While I think it's a cool suite of products. It isn't as exciting as working on inventing new concepts. Though I will say no one comes near to the set of video related services/features than Brightcove.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In order to attract the best of new talent. The Company does need to work on developer relations and having a strong brand of being on the cutting edge. Some of this can only come by exploring new products, platforms, and tech.

    I worked at Brightcove

    Pros

Super smart friendly people, unlimited vacation, gorgeous HQ, amazing documentation, solid products.

    Cons

No 401K match, lack of transparency in roadmap and overall vision.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Collaborate with employees on their career paths, aim for more of a plug-and-play approach to integrating advanced features (and partner technologies) instead of relying on customer development efforts.

    Pros

My particular department managers are supportive, creative and engaging. Work-life balance is important to this employer and flexible work schedules are appreciated. Culture is extremely comfortable. Benefits are excellent.

    Cons

Nothing to say here at this time. Startup company that went public and has had many changes but that is typical.

I have been working at Brightcove full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible location and time. You can work remotely from other cities, even countries and you can work from home any time you want. Light process and innovation is always welcomed. 2 hack weeks per year.

    Cons

The company seems struggling with finding the next big thing. The product has been stable for years. Not a lot of promotion opportunities within the company.

I have been working at Brightcove full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    * Dynamic space, interesting customers and technology
    * Great people, great work environment
    * After a period where innovation slowed down due to "engineering debt" pace has really picked up and a lot of cool new product is shipping or about to ship.
    * Culture: Passionate, fun, high energy

    Cons

    * Not really a con, but competitive market and ambitious company means expectations are high and you have to want to work hard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mostly doing a good job; Keep it up.

    Exciting changes for software developers

I have been working at Brightcove full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There's a lot of exciting projects happening in development which makes for an interesting time. The move away from a monolithic codebase to smaller, bite-sized projects that are fully managed by one team has been a very healthy move.

The people who work here are smart and fun to work with. There's plenty of opportunities to spend time with others through Tech Wed, Friday show and tell with beers, Hack Week, etc.

    Cons

Brightcove is getting a little old, in software years. With any older company, you start to get legacy pains. If you have to work on these legacy pieces, it's painful. The systems department is in the process of rebuilding, and that's painful too.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on developers, inside the company and out. That's what the best software companies do and Brightcove needs to do even more of.

Former Employee - Business Development in Boston, MA

I worked at Brightcove full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

-Relaxed atmosphere, lower/middle-level employees were great to work with
-Beautiful office, great location, lots of internal perks and great parties

    Cons

    -Compensation packages were completely unfair
-No room for growth in sales and marketing
-Management never connected with the "front lines" of Brightcove to really understand what was going on in the market
-Make changes to process, products, and offerings so often that you can never plant your feet and grow
-Lots of favoritism in upper management
-Very top focused and less focused on the impact major changes make on its employees as a whole

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Talk to all of your employees before making drastic decisions. The people speaking with prospects and customers will have much more insight into the appropriate direction of the company and will help to make more informed decisions

    Pros

    - Great culture: awesome, young staff with enthusiasm for the company. Lots of perks like free food/snacks, beverages, and parties to celebrate various events
    - Good work/life balance: Unlimited vacation, flexible hours

    Cons

    - Don't invest in their employees the right way, a little too laid back about certain aspects of the job
    - No clear vision about what they want, and how to get there
    - Not a lot of guidance for junior employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more in the growth of your people, provide clear guidelines, and stop acting like a start up.
