    Pros

Good IT staff. They're really earnest in wanting to do a good job.

    Cons

Poor management. Generaly they don't see staff as partners, more like a commodity. Which wouldn't be bad if they paid commodity prices.

Given that it's crown corporation it has a hard time finding direction. One week it's "let's googlefiy this place" to "you need be careful with your office supply budget". The provincial government is too attached to the profits from gambling and can be impacted by the party in power

If you are in IT you will have to live in Kamloops. The city is OK but it's small and remote, 4 hours to Vancouver and nothing else in between. if you aren't happy you will have few options within the city, there is a good chance you'll have to move. If you're from Kamloops this isn't a issue but its a risk for those not from the city.

I would only recommend to those with limited opportunities or are already a resident of Kamloops.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Are you a Vegas class gaming company or an agent of the government? Pick the one you can stick with.

    Pros

food, gym, work/life balance is decent, commute is good, pay is decent but not great. The rest is all bad.

    Cons

senior management have very poor communication skills and work ethic, too focused on outsourcing and maximizing profit at the expense of everything else. This can only lead to the undoing of the company.

Middle management is mismanaging projects, funds and employee resources, as are senior management.
They respect the opinions of contractors, and bash the opinions of employees; and it slaps them in the face and they ask for more. Management ignores employee feedback, and middle management don't know how to properly evaluate the skills of their staff, they promote the incompetent ones and the sociopaths, or whoever can play the best politics, while ignoring those with true talent and skill.

Wages have been locked for multiple years, no room for career growth here, they don't spend money to train or educate their staff to even attempt improve their skills, employees are stressed and overworked and worry about being fired at any moment, things are getting worse with each passing year, IT is failing us, employees are backstabbing ladder climbers, expect to play the politics game to survive beyond year 1

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

a complete re-org is needed, starting with a complete purge of all managers and old-timers, and then the hiring of new people that know how to actually manage a company. They desperately need to re-educate and retrain all other staff to upgrade their skills to something relevant.

Slow adopters, not agile, poor culture shift

    Pros

Good benefits, reasonable (but not great) pay.

    Cons

Slow to adopt new technologies. Big downswing in the culture in the past several years. Became all about the bottom dollar with little regard for employee satisfaction, morale, positive work environment, etc. People have become stressed and overworked.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your people and you will see gains in productivity and happy heathy employees and culture.

    Pros

Exciting work environment and subject matter to work with. Very bright people. Excellent office with newest technology

    Cons

Complex business model with very little mentorship. A lot of ambiguity relating to decisions and accountability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should provide some guidance on expectations. Quicker decision making...less mind reading.

Current Employee - Manager in Vancouver, BC (Canada)

    Pros

Good benefits and location for modern office (Van) near skytrain
    free coffee and tea

    Cons

Constant misdirection by current executives who are not united in where they want to go. Not a lot of teamwork and working together, especialy when the IT area spends more time and money on new toys than helping other depts. Very slow and traditional, even though the story they are trying to tell is opposite to that. Cost containment is painful. Make no mistake, this company is part of the ministry of finance and it is all about cost, not people or progress. Bad internal communications.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You want us to move faster but are trying to do it with the same old people that got you into current mess. How many Directors do you really need? IT needs better quality people who help. Depts are inflated with too many sr managers and directors. too many people in marketing and finance

    Pros

There seems to be lots of opportunity to grow and there is ample support in place to help develop employees. The corporation facilitates millions of dollars of funding for education, healthcare and much more. Not to mention the employees organize community fundraisers for things like United Way. How could you not feel good about working here.

    Cons

Culture is very diverse. There are distinct differences within the culture across the various divisions. Working for one group won't be the same as working for another. There is a lot of history in some areas of the company and with that some resistance to change but it's happening.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep developing people and creating opportunities for employees to grow. Try to bring the various cultures in different divisions together.

    Pros

good salary, benenfit package, ground level staff great people beyond that ....nothing.

    Cons

Senior Management doesn't seem to know what is going on, workloads keep increasing yet staff are being cut all the time. No sense of well being most staff are always watching their back wondering who is next. Long term experience means nothing to them, all management is concerned about is their own agenda and firing long term employee's with severance and replacing them with new, cheaper staff is just a cost of doing business to them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

after how many employee surveys that are in the toilet and you still don't care speaks volumes about your core values and the business's core value of which is to make money at all costs,

    Pros

    A great group of employees
Company is located in a great community with tons to offer for family life
Company has lots of money to spend on projects (although the purse strings are getting tighter)

    Cons

The company started in Kamloops in 1985 and was an amazing employer who really cared about the employees. Benefits were great and people had fun and enjoyed the job. A recent change in senior management has radically changed the landscape. Employees are just a commodity that is used to the greatest extent possible. Employee engagement scores are low and only bolstered by the falsely high scores by management. Great benefits, like the flex work program were abandoned so management could get more work from employees.

Recently, the company laid off a number of long term employees only to replace them with lower salaried employees. They are outsourcing a large number of IT jobs at the moment. Morale is very low and people are scared.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You can't get blood from a stone. You achieve your success through the front line workers who look to you for support. I'm not sure what overpriced consulting firm suggest that you take this new route for business operations, but It's so draconian that I suggest that you go back to the old way where people felt appreciated and secure. You'll get a lot more work out of them
