Good technical work, had to fight for better compensation

Senior Staff IC Design Engineer (Former Employee)
San Jose, CA

I worked at Broadcom full-time for more than 5 years

Proshad been lucky enough in some special technical position, quite exposed, and grew fast.

Conscompany was going through compensation restructuring then, not really a friendly change for existing employees.

Advice to Senior Managementplease keep an eye on building a better work place as well, while focusing on improve company bottom line.

Good work, poor compensation

Staff II Engineer (Current Employee)
Sunnyvale, CA

I have been working at Broadcom full-time for more than 3 years

ProsInteresting work, very little office politics (at least at the engineers level)

Cons* Poor compensation. Despite excellent focal review, the compensation is paltry.
* Emphasis/encouragement on career development is non existent
* Cafeteria food sucks big time. (not a big con, but worth mentioning)

Advice to Senior ManagementPay well else be ready to lose employees to your competitors!

meritocratic in general

Principal IC Design Engineer (Current Employee)
San Jose, CA

I have been working at Broadcom full-time for more than 3 years

ProsYou are never left wanting for work. And although a large part of it can be grinding at times, individually you tend to learn different aspects. Personally, I have picked up a more general knowledge about chip design process that I wasn't as exposed to previously.

The company is never standing still - there are new product ideas and engineers are expected to handle the challenges of new technology, meet market deadlines and do it with a fairly functional chip. If you can do that and as management grows to appreciate your work, you will be properly rewarded (although I was initially disappointed).

Generally interactions between engineers and first-level management are not political, but based on performance and there is a healthy respect. Communication is valued and hiring reflects the importance of being able to work with other team members.

ConsAs with any big companies, there are politics and one can easily get lost in the shuffle. There can be vast divergence based on the manager's rating and what he values which can be unfair. And some groups have managers who are more vocal about their teams. Also, some divisions can be rated more important to the company and there is more growth there ...

Advice to Senior ManagementTruly reward people who want to innovate and improve processes. There are risks involved but if managed, the improvement in productivity helps the company's bottom line!
