Current Employee - Principal Software Engineer  in  Santa Clara, CA
Current Employee - Principal Software Engineer in Santa Clara, CA

    Pros

lots of cool projects on which to work with top tier customers and competitive compensation plans composed of base salary, stock (RSUs), annual bonus, and ESPP.

    Cons

Vacation policy is awful. There is no accrued entitled vacation. Instead employees can take time off when their schedule allows with manager approval. But the schedules of highly utilized employees never have open time (and who would feel secure if they weren't utilized), how can you predict your schedule in order to plan vacations months in advance, and the system is extremely biased upon ones manager's philosophy of employees down-time.

Also, although their are classes offered on advancement and an advancement road map, I've been in the exact same position for several years even though my reviews have always been excellent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I know you guys know the vacation policy is terrible even though you had the nerve to promote it as better than the previous accrual-based system, because none of the copious surveys have asked about it since its inception nor has it ever been brought up again.

Also, I realize bloated director salaries are the norm today, but Broadcom seems to be one of the more extreme examples with directors continuing to get 10-50 million dollar bonuses even though the company's performance has been anything but stellar. Why don't you put some questions about this on the next survey?

    Pros

Smart people to work with. Learned a lot. Flex time was good. Benefits were good.Career development was decent.

    Cons

Work/Life balance was poor. Too many global locations led to many meetings at all hours of the day and night. As the company got bigger, it became more process oriented and management heavy. It used to be much more nimble in the earlier years. It took them too long to make product line decisions, leading to closure of many business units such as the closure of the mobile cellular BU.

    Pros

Nice company to work for. Good benefit and compensation. It is a place where engineers are well respected.

    Cons

The work was separated into too many locations at different time zone. It makes collaboration more difficult.
Decision making processes take too long sometimes.
Made several wrong decisions to acquire the wrong companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Distribute the work into different teams with the consideration of locations/time zones in mind.

    Pros

Good technology, work on high selling products. I found work life balance to be OK - sometimes you have to work extra hours, but typically not.

    Cons

Management is focused on the success of projects and are indifferent to their employees career. Their attitude is if you don't like it, leave. I also found it a rather joyless place to work - they cut all celebrations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention to employees career advancement.
