I have been working at Brocade Communications full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Investing heavily into software business. Join here if you can - your job may be safe (until you look outside).

    Cons

The software business seems to be loaded with folks who talk big.

De-investing in the traditional business - perhaps explains the lack of empathy towards employees who built the company. The new CEO and his new senior management seem to be bent on putting their stamp.

It doesn't really matter what products and innovation are created at Brocade (software or hardware). Brocade sales and marketing teams are clueless on how to sell innovation, and gutless to lead and sell differentiated products (not to mention some really lazy marketing folks amongst a very small minority of well intentioned ones).

At best Brocade will become a me too and fast follower company like old Foundry. Not sure if that works in IP networking anymore. Arista seems to taken that lead from Foundry.

It's funny that the only thing they seemed to have innovated even on FC side is increase the speeds. Sure. This will help when every startup out there is hell bent on making SANs history at worst, or irrelevant at best.

With no real innovation and unproven (or yet to be proven) software business - Brocade is beginning to spiral down. It's only a matter of time (1-2yr most).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lot of smooth talking, no proven track record, snake oil types have taken over. Can you separate wheat from the chafe? Have you done it before at this size of the company facing the challenges Brocade faces? Stop the charade.

I have been working at Brocade Communications full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Consistent bonuses, and a pretty decent ESPP for a while.
I work with some really smart and fun people!

    Cons

Where do I begin? New management hasn't shown the ability to improve shareholder value by increasing revenues from sales. Instead, it's all one-trick-pony cost reduction, heavily reinforced by offshoring (which they seem to be very proud of). Morale is at an all-time low since I came here ten years ago, and attrition is very noticeable and having a detrimental impact in engineering.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company's are indeed people. Show you care about your employees, and not just the bottom line and bragging about how you can get 2.5 contractors in India for every one employee in America.

I worked at Brocade Communications full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

As being part of an acquired company, the company I was with gave great options and a good salary. You worked on leading edge products and features.

    Cons

    Expected long hours,
    expected late hours of work
    lack of options/incentives from Brocade
little ability to move between product families
Rehashed products no longer bleading edge just cheaper lower price points as of the past several years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stay ahead of the curve on leading edge technology and features
Focus on broadening portfolios SDN is only a small start
Balance work life/home life with incentives - you can not demand startup like hours without startup like incentives
Cross pollination and the ability to learn and move between product divisions
    Leverage assets across divisions

I have been working at Brocade Communications full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    1. Corporate headquarters facility is very nice and modern
    2. Salary is mostly competitive
    3. Decent work-life balance, for those who want it
    4. Most of the individual contributor employees are very nice

    Cons

    1. Leaders have big goals but have made little progress moving into and through the changes which they espouse
    2. Their go-to-market (sales and marketing) execution is weak and flawed, mostly characterized by adding new senior leaders but without needed organizational changes and culture improvements
    3. Huge emphasis on frugality and purchasing slows people from being able to do activities that enable the market gains needed to execute on the vision - many employees believe this is because the company is actually being set up to be acquired
    4. Leadership team is mostly comprised of people from smaller companies with no industry reputation - therefore they are not very influential and lack the ability to "change the industry" (their claimed goal)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Good luck on your new market/customer strategies - please consider bringing in people who know these customer segments better, and not just at the most senior level.

Some of the business changes that you are attempting to accomplish will require best-in-class talent. However, your lack of concern about employee engagement will hurt your ability to achieve those business goals, as the smartest and best employees will leave quickly and you will only be left with those who are comfortably unmotivated.

I have been working at Brocade Communications full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits and pay. Brocade pays a little above average and the benefits are very good with an additional 40 hours available for volunteer time in the community. There is a gym available onsite. Very good working relationship with development. Brocade hasn't missed a bonus as long as I have been here but that is not a given. there is decent work-life balance.

    Cons

Career dead end. Most people have been here (Broomfield Campus anyway) for many, many years in their respective roles which is a double edged sword in the sense that people are happy here but there is no movement. Managers don't seem to have the time or interest to foster career plans for team members. Other than the bi-annual performance review I have had to initiate all manager one-on-one conversations about career growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep chasing the IP side like the market wants to see, but don't forget Fibre Channel pays the bills.

    Pros

Brocade used to be a good place to work as an engineer, but it is no longer.

    Cons

The management cannot execute in hyper competitive and commoditizing IP networking business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Split the IP and SAN businesses. Let the IP business prove it can be profitable on its own.

    Pros

Great people. Good benefits (401k, ESPP, Bonus Program). The products are great and fun to work on. You will learn a ton if you are just starting your career.

    Cons

    -Understaffed in my particular group
-Workers who excel are not rewarded enough to stay at company
    -Lazy workers not held accountable

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward excelling employees; make them want to stay with company. Staff according to high turnover (which is the nature of IT), otherwise teams fall apart.
