I have been working at Brookstone full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Most peers will offer assistance and teach new skills when requested and there are Career Growth opportunities if you are willing to work and wait for them. The Culture is typically positive and nurturing. Recent new ownership has allowed for company growth again. The employee discount and 401K matching is nice too!

    Cons

Unfortunately, proper training is lacking in many cases due to high turn over the last couple of years. Benefits are a bit lacking unfortunately. There is no tuition assistance and very little support for personal growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In some cases, management should give a little more focus and support to their direct reports as well as being more open and try to do away with the "need to know" attitude.

I worked at Brookstone full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Most people are friendly and easy to get along with, the culture is terrific. There is a lot of variety in the projects that you work on ranging from stereos to app-controlled toys. Lots of fun products to work and play with! Lots of room for growth and advancement if you are willing to put in the time and effort. Growing company with expanding needs and expanding budgets.

    Cons

Innovation has taken the backseat to minimizing the cost as product design is controlled by businessmen not the engineers and designers. Long 10-12 hour work days have become the norm. Workload is not very consistent, some weeks will be very quiet with little to do while other weeks will be extremely hectic with more work then you can possibly get done in a normal day. Executives are in-decisive and often change their minds midway through a project. Benefits aren't great and there are almost no raises.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a CEO that is willing to work at Brookstone for more then a year. Have a clear vision of what a project should be at the start.

I have been working at Brookstone full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great brand. Unique blend of businesses - Mall stores, Airport stores, Catalog, Website and Wholesale. Smaller business feel - not weighted down by many layers and silos. Team spirit growing under recently placed CEO that came up through the company over the past 15 years.

    Cons

CEO position has been a revolving door, all placed from outside the company. This caused too many shifts in strategy and senior leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Re-invest in the brand. People love this brand - more people should be exposed to it.

    Pros

Many good people to work with.

    Cons

The holiday season is their busiest time- whether in the stores or at corporate. Expect to work 7 days a week.

I worked at Brookstone (less than an year)

    Pros

    - Nice people
    - Flexible Hours
    - Great perks
    - People are open about their work

    Cons

    - Been through 3 CEOs over the last 2 years
    - Constant change for change's sake (due to ownership's insistence)
    - People overworked
    - Very poor and unsustainable business model

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overhaul the entire business model. No one wants to spend $20 on a product they can buy on Amazon for $5.

Funnel significantly more resources towards the IT department. The amount of support needed for the internal systems and applications are frustrating employees in the IT department, given the lack of resources.

Persuade ownership that this is the right direction to go. I am convinced senior management understands all of the issues, but ownership constantly prevents any progress from being made.

    Pros

Great Products - Industry Leader - Some Cool Employees - Has a multichannel approach that many companies no longer have.

    Cons

Overpriced Items - Not much focus on core products - Groupthink - There are groups and clicks in management that protect themselves and their friends.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pick a direction carefully and then head towards it - Don't pick decisions easily and then change directions constantly.

    I worked at Brookstone

    Pros

The company seeks out unique merchandise to sell. The stores are fun to work in.There is a good succession planning program that allows assistant managers and store managers that have proved themselves to grow within the company. There is still a strong sense of teamwork in the field.

    Cons

Company changed once it was taken private. The culture of open and honest communication was reduced to "need to know". Most of the executives that made the company great were terminated and the new owners brought in many of their own players. Expense control became much more of a focus.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to recapture some of the "magic" that existed prior to the buyout. It was what allowed the company to go from the brink of bankruptcy to a successful IPO in 3 1/2 years. Everyone was focused on sales and profit and wanted the overall company to continue to grow. There were no silos.

I have been working at Brookstone

    Pros

Compensation is great and management is very concerned for professional growth as well as your personal growth. Everyone is very friendly.

    Cons

I have yet to find a con. I have only been there for 2 months but everyone else seems happy there too.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be a little quicker to realize when a temporary position is actually needed enough to be permanent. Don't stop being such a fun and trendy company.
