I have been working at Broward Community College part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Very dynamic and fun, so the school never feels like it gets stagnant.

    Cons

Departments and areas tend to feel like they all work independently of each other.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Blend more with the work environment, so there's less division in the types of workers and departments.

I have been working at Broward Community College full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Lots of time off. 2 weeks for winter break & 1 week for spring break, without using vacation time.

    Cons

Compensation is below average. In my department, people worked in silos- very little interaction with peers or management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to lead & create a culture of teamwork.

I worked at Broward Community College as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

Great sense of community amongst the VPA staff and faculty. Colleagues were helpful, and higher ups were supportive and offered guidance.

    Cons

Limited opportunity for advancement in the adjunct position. No benefits. No job security. Limited ability to influence or change curriculum.

    Pros

Good people, great experiences, everyone works together

    Cons

    More training, direction and communication

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They have no clue to what's going on. They make decisions based upon hear say instead of finding out for themselves what's really going on.

I have been working at Broward Community College full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The employees at the grass roots level really care about the students and each other. There is a sense of teamwork working in 'trenches' together. If you are lucky enough to work South or Central Campus, there is much less stress and fewer iron fists. Benefits are great, vacation and breaks are great.

    Cons

There is a strong disconnect between the administration and the faculty. The faculty are underpaid and not respected for the most part. There is an extreme malfunction with technology and very bad data. Nothing ever matches and there is no proper training on how to use it. It is a very hard place for a single working parent due to the inflexibility of making up hours. HR is a total waste and basically caters to the leadership and not employees. Certain behaviors of certain leaders certainly is not what I would call leadership. Bullying, passive aggressiveness, and nepotism is rampant in certain departments and the entire college knows it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The president needs to surround himself with leaders a) who are experienced and up-to-date in their field, b) that set a good example, and c) that put the students, employees and college first otherwise the college looks and runs like a joke. Maybe get some advice from how to fix that mess from Will Holcombe or some of the seasoned (but respected) leaders/employees there.

I have been working at Broward Community College full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Not a super high stress place

    Cons

Pay could be better. There's not a ton of career growth unless you want to get into management. Projects always have to focus on student success.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You claim you want a high Gartner score and run an ITIL shop.

You need in house knowledge. There are critical systems where one single person has the knowledge of that system. What do you expect to do if that person is hit by a bus?

I worked at Broward Community College full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Experience in "higher education". Living in South Florida. The close proximity to the ocean. Partial tuition reimbursement. Knowing where you don't want to work.

    Cons

The culture at Broward College is to distrust, blame, produce as little work as possible, and micromanage high-performing employees. High-performing employees are not challenged nor rewarded and are somewhat pushed out while low-performing employees are promoted and protected because of whom they know or are best friends with. Unfortunately, if Broward College continues to operate in this manner not only will every single employee suffer but the students they serve will suffer as well. I hope that Broward College gets their act together for the sake of calling themselves "higher education".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not to fool anyone that "upper management" will even read this or knows what glassdoor is, but if upper management supported all wellness initiatives, let employees do their jobs without micromanaging, trusted their employees, recognized and rewarded their successes, and encouraged and paid for professional development, Broward College would be a completely different place.
