I have been working at Broward County full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

They have great benefits, they value professional development and work-life balance, and it is typically a low stress working environment.

    Cons

Poor culture, a lot of older, disgruntled employees, and outdated systems. Whenever they try to update old systems, they hire a low bid contractor and it never turns out right.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's not 1980 anymore! The old way of doing things is inefficient whether the "boomers" will accept it, or not. Also, you get what you pay for!

I have been working at Broward County part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The Pay was honestly the best part of the job. As was seeing the regular customers that would come by every time I was at concession.

    Cons

The worst part of this job was the less than mediocre management, inadequate training and, a sense of self-entitlement among the managers at my park.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do Better at communicating with employees and cut out the favoritism crap.

    I worked at Broward County

    Pros

Good job security relative to private sector.

    Cons

Pay stagnates. Those at the top (Directors, Asst. Directors etc.) make way too much more than the worker bees who do all the work in the divisions and can't get a raise. Extremely difficult to make changes, staff feels powerless to enact changes within their divisions...politics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have worked in several different divisions and have found poor morale all throughout County Government. Do something to improve employee morale and help to create a positive work environment/culture.

I worked at Broward County (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Defined benefit pension. Advancement possible.

    Cons

Initiatives take a great deal of time to implement and often are abandoned after a few years for the next great "thing." D

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create more opportunities to dialog with all levels of staff.

I have been working at Broward County full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

job security. holidays, good sick time benefit, but if you take more than 5 full days of sick leave in a rolling calendar year, you get put on sick time probation! If you have young kids this is a possibility, so why give the sick time if you cannot use it!?

    Cons

no upward mobility, low salary, heavy work load...management only looks out for management. At the county whether you give 150% or 50% in your job, at the end with your annual review you get ZERO, nothing, so this promotes an environment of apathy. why do more?
    No teleworking policy

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lead your work force, look out for them, build the kind of professional relationships you say you want. but we are not treated professionally.

I have been working at Broward County full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Joined Broward County ETS couple months ago. The management and the staff around are vey professional. I believe there would be chances for promotion in the future, however its just too early for me to assume. Being in the ETS department, we get the advantage of newer technology. Currently use a intel i7 dell laptop and 2 screen monitors.

    Cons

Medical benefits are not to great. Have choice of 4 plans and they all have very high deductible. Also, the increases were not discussed at the time of employment. Still not sure how that works. Once you ask other staff, all have different answers.

I have been working at Broward County full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Time-off. A few good people (but not many).

    Cons

As someone else described it, a "go along to get along" mentality where employees keep their mouths shut and go along with what is sometimes unethical behavior in order to remain. A lot of incompetent people who are there just because they kissed someone's butt. A "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" system when it comes to promotions. Outdated offices that look like they are still in the 1970's. Performance is not rewarded, nor is ethical conduct. Those who try to change things are quickly gone.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Investigate when someone complains, don't permit harassment or retaliation. A lot of management are unscroupulous and should be shown the door.
