Brown Shoe fun job not alot of opportunities.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Brown Shoe

ProsFun atmosphere, very organized, not a sales orientated atmosphere. Easy to learn and sales numbers are not hard to hit if you try.

ConsNot alot of opportunities for promotions. Alot of empty promises. Usually pays much lower than most other company's same position. Annual raise usually very poor.

– I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Good job with downfalls

Assistant Manager (Current Employee)
Monroe, OH

I have been working at Brown Shoe full-time for less than a year

ProsGreat coworkers and management, willing to work with schedules, and decent pay for retail. Good temporary or beginning job. As long as you do a good job, you have a good chance at advancing in the company.

ConsAs with any retail or food service position, you have to deal with all sorts of customers. Some may be angry at you for something you have no control over, such as pricing or sales.

Good experience in retail

Assistant Store Manager (Former Employee)
Council Bluffs, IA

I worked at Brown Shoe full-time for less than a year

ProsEncouraged to learn and do things independently. Very soon, I was independently completing things like opening and closing the store, preparing and delivering bank deposits, training and coaching new associates, etc.

ConsThere is a huge focus on upselling accessories, like socks and shoe cleaner. Sometimes my coworkers and I would buy socks if our numbers were low, just so we wouldn't get in trouble when real customers weren't interested. It was dumb.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Low Pay, Low Raises, and Poor District Management

Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
Columbus, OH

I worked at Brown Shoe full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe store manager at my location was wonderful and the staff at my location was fantastic until changes were made by the district manager.

ConsNew district manager came in from a fast food chain and had no idea how to run the business. Plus the DSM brought in people to replace managers from the fast food place and things were ran very unethically. As far as the company goes, they have ok benefits but the pay is horrible and you get very small raises if you get a raise at all. It is very hard to move up in the company because there are only a few management positions and most employees that make it to management stay for years.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of the DSM in that district and it would be a wonderful place to work again.

Great Company, just grew too fast and hurt stores

Associate Manager (Current Employee)
Lynchburg, VA

I have been working at Brown Shoe full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat People to work with, loved the shoes and discount, had fun everyday helping people, nice bonus system for managers

ConsHours, but that is always with retail, could have got better shoes in shipment to help sales, wish they could have kept the store open instead of closing

Advice to Senior ManagementSlow down on growth, opening more stores while closing others that are performing

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend
