I have been working at Brown Shoe full-time

    Pros

Great customer base, great foot in the door type job. Have plenty of time to master position if store manager is willing to let you.

    Cons

Upper management likes to micromanage, too focused on numbers, employee discount is extremely unfair for the work put in, pay is too low for single coverage days each day.

    Advice to Management

Pay the employees for the job You want them to do, give time limit on training in smaller volumes. Hold store managers accountable if not met. Lastly, listen to the employees more. Corporate will listen but not each district manager cares about all of their team members.

I worked at Brown Shoe full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-Salary w/overtime -relaxed dress code -midtown location -pleasant people

    Cons

-no work/life balance possible -often times not a real team environment

    Advice to Management

watch pointless spending hire actual product dev managers, not just designers appointed the role of supervisor

I have been working at Brown Shoe part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

For an associate: Easy training, very little tasks to do. Pretty much moving shoes on the walls and runs, cash register, unpack shipping and break down boxes..consult with customers and sell things, straighten by skew numbers, and flip the store when its back to school. Mop occasionally and sweep every night. Not hard at all and im a teen. Also very flexible with your schedule. Assosiate discount up to 30% and guest discount as well.

    Cons

No holiday pay since im part time, very strict company rules to protect against internal employee theft and external theft. Check your bags when you leave the store at end of shift. Must memorize things in case a director comes in from the corporate. Such as VIP, (verify inspect people) etc..

    Advice to Management

Be calm training new people. I was very nervous and i made a mistake on the register- and was kicked off.

I have been working at Brown Shoe full-time

    Pros

I love to work here, but more so because of the people I work with. work is easy, and they pay pretty well.

    Cons

district management stinks and there's no way to advance in the company, at least from what ive seen

    Advice to Management

let your own workers advance through the company

I worked at Brown Shoe full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

They are in the process of remodeling the departments to make areas to discuss work a little less formal setting.. There is a cafeteria in the main building They have a gym with showers. The insurance available is reasonable compared to other companies.

    Cons

They stop the bonus program they used to give out every year. It was stopped when their was a downturn in the business but they never reinstated it after the business recovered. They stopped us being able to buy from the warehouse direct, we used to be able to get a 50% discount on the merchandise from the warehouse but they ended that program, new program has a 30% discount. There is an overall morale problem and a lot of stress in the departments that are not being addressed. They do superficial things to try to give the employees free soda and coffee machines. They structured their vacation time so you ecru tightly that at the being of the year if you scheduled a vacation

    Advice to Management

They need to reinstate the bonus program. They need to work with the supervisors to bring the stress level down in the departments.

    Pros

Good benefits, pay is ok ,great employee discounts !

    Cons

I worked for consumer services and seniority is not respected. Managers believe they have robots instead of people. Super controlling environment ! Managers are not friendly at all. Stressful environment

    Advice to Management

Learn how to treat people before you call yourself manager

I worked at Brown Shoe full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Ever growing company that's stable. Great discount on shoes (30%), and most people who are hired have great personalities and has a great focus on customer service that most stores today do not have. Bonus is available for Associate Managers and above. Had a pension plan for all full time members. Dental insurance is great and affordable.

    Cons

Major lack of hours even for full time staff, bi weekly checks were never consistent, vacation time is occurred as you work, not given to you at the beginning of the year. The health care insurance company uses is the lowest form they could find. DSM's hardly visit their stores, and store managers can come and go as often as they like, Which means they don't work a 40 hour work week, but get paid for it.

    Advice to Management

Check on upper level management to make sure that they are actually working for what they are getting paid for. Have a better way to distribute hours throughout the year so your not having one person work an entire 8 hour shift alone.

Great job at first. Until they let go full time to hire part time so they didn't have to pay benefits.
