I have been working at Brown Shoe full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Flexible schedule. Associate discount. 401K option for store managers. Ability to perform all store functions. You never have a chance to get bored, there is always something to do.

    Cons

Unreasonable expectations for payroll budget. Often times working alone from 9:00AM to 2:00PM without the ability to use the restroom or take a break. Lack of incentive for assistant managers and sales associates. All assistant managers get the same wage increase annually regardless of performance, as with sales associates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employees are human beings that need to use the restroom, eat lunch, and feel safe at work. Stop scrimping on payroll hours at the expense of the employees who are forced to follow an unsafe bare bones schedule leaving them alone for many hours each day. It is very dangerous to people's safety and emotional state.

I have been working at Brown Shoe full-time for less than a year

    Pros

I love the atmosphere at my store- my Manager and coworkers are all great, and we (for the most part) have friendly customers. The employee discount makes buying the new shoes exceedingly tempting, which is great for us shoe people! Full-time comes with benefits, which are decent. Schedules are pretty flexible, so if you need a day off here and there it's not a hassle, and even if you close, you're off by 9:40pm at the latest. We have a great team spirit, and try to have fun with our store goals.

    Cons

Grumpy customers, of course. I feel like sometimes the guidelines on when to refuse returns are fuzzy, which does make me a little nervous, because corporate keeps track. Pay is not all that great, and short of moving to St. Louis, advancements pretty much stop short at Store Manager. I have heard stories of other Store Managers getting away with bad management, as long as their store is still bring in decent sales.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some sort of commission would give employees incentive to sell more accessories, and training for lower management would help us develop more, and probably stay longer. Quarterly salary reviews for lower management would be awesome too, since I was low-balled when I was first promoted, and don't know how much longer I'll have to make it work at this pay grade.

I worked at Brown Shoe full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Large company with many divisions, easy to transfer between divisions, good pay and 401K, discounts on shoes, good parent company

    Cons

Very little training, poor management structure, few paths to success and always a popularity contest. Not judged by the quality of your work

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a better system of managers, so that the entry and mid-level employees can talk to a supervisor

    Pros

The people that you work with are great and entertaining when work is slow. The discounts are great. If you want just a few hours, they will give it to you.

    Cons

    The pay is low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you pay your employees a little bit more, you will be able to retain the good employees.

    Pros

Pay is competitive. and meeting new people are always great

    Cons

Managment can be very poor. favoritism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To focus on the people that are doing right and give them what they deserve to other's that are doing nothing but get all this parsing due to favoritism.

I have been working at Brown Shoe full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Friendly environment, do not have to take work home.

    Cons

Small employee discount. Always understaffed and often work alone for 4+ hours at a time. Way too focused on metrics that deal with everything but selling shoes. Terrible upper management with the DM often ignored by SM.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let the SM do their job and ease up on all of the micromanaging from the DM's and RM's. If the company truly cared about controlling stolen shoes installing some cameras for the stores would go a long way.
