I worked at Brown Shoe part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great discount, which you can get right away and use at any store, and you can give a discount card to a friend or family member, opportunities to advance to assistant manager.

    Cons

Hours are based on your percentages of sales for the week. No sitting or leaning. Not allowed to wear athletic shoes (only if you're a female). Have to ask the same set of questions repeatedly to each customer so you sound like a robot. Customers are reluctant to buy because they feel like we get commission. Can be boring if you're in a smaller/slower store or too stressful in a busy/big store. Do not always work around other schedules.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to offer higher pay for a job like this, even if it is retail. Employees should be able to wear athletic shoes. The connect 4 system doesn't work very well, and hours should not be based on how many accessories you sell and how many emails you get. Also need to work around schedules of other jobs better, and allow sick days, etc.

I worked at Brown Shoe full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

At the time I was employed at Brown Shoe it was a wonderful opportunity in fashion that I would not have otherwise been able to obtain in the St. Louis area.

    Cons

    There was no job security!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Really get to know what your employees are really doing in their day to day jobs. I was the only one at Brown that did what I did and no one above me really understood the job and all of the many different things I did for the company. It's a shame because my skill level was very vast and when my dept. closed they couldn't find a job for me within the company because they didn't understand what I did!!! CRAZY!!!!!!

I have been working at Brown Shoe full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Good pay that is it

    Cons

Upper management lets the staffs dictate what's goes on with the managers they the use of the jntegrity team hotline in the past year dsm and store managers of 10 plus years have been fired unjustly because they allow the assistant managers to get away with it. If you do not want to be the one in charge of your store than this is the company for you can't hold anyone accountable!'

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Replace some Hr reps and regionals who allow this crap to go on take a closer look at who is really running your stores because it is not the ones with the store manager title

I have been working at Brown Shoe part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good discount, some good people, and you are on your feet constantly.

    Cons

Some really bad/annoying people, you are on your feet constantly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop telling your employees that they need to make their numbers especially when they have worked for you for 2+ years and usually make them. If you decide to change something and your associates tell you it is a bad idea or doesn't work, don't keep it! You big wigs up at corporate offices don't know what goes on in our stores. We do! We are the front lines so stop giving us things that will "make it easier" on us when it just makes life more difficult and drives people to leave the company like me.

    Pros

Good culture for many, "family at work" atmosphere, flexible work schedules for many, fair pay, opportunty to move laterally or upwards

    Cons

Not nearly enough communication from senior leaders

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to communicate more often than you think....people want to know what you are thinking about the direction of the company and where they fit in.
