I worked at Buck Consultants full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A company with mentors that can help one grow in his or her track. The actuarial study program provided ample support for those writing exams. The annual performance reviews were fair and objective. As Tyco ltd. was a conglomerate client I worked on for several years, I was exposed to lots of actuarial concepts when working on mergers and acquisition and spinoffs projects.

    Cons

I resigned to be with family in a small town in Upstate New York. I was very content working at Buck Consultants. I would love to return and work for Buck Consultants now in the San Francisco/Bay Area where I am residing now. No Cons for me personally.

Life at Buck Consultants, A Xerox Company

I have been working at Buck Consultants

    Pros

There are still many very talented and nice, hard working people at Buck, despite a lot of changes in ownership and management. Buck has a long, proud history. The company encourages people to work from home, and provides a lot of freedom - as long as you get your work done and produce results, you are pretty much left alone.

    Cons

There are many, many cons, unfortunately. Buck has been drawn under the Xerox umbrella the past few years and Buck management has very little control. Turnover has been extremely high - when people who have been with the company for 20+ years, decide to leave, there are huge problems - and long service, talented consultants continue to jump ship in droves. The loss of talent is heartbreaking - Xerox does not seem to value its relationship with either its employees or its clients. As a result, the good consultants leave and join the competitors and then bring their clients with them. Buck just froze its DB plan, so all there is on the benefits side is a 401(k) plan and not very generous health plan. Fraser Smart, Buck's head guy, traveled the country and visited many offices where he told all of us "if you are in it for just money, you should dust off your resume."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I am not sure how to fix this. Business is very bad and Buck is now tainted by the poor services of Xerox's TBO group. The best thing for Buck would be buy itself, go private. But I doubt Xerox would let that happen - Buck margins are incredibly high, so my guess is that Xerox will continue to draw on the nice cash from Buck, and turn its back to Buck's slow demise. I think if management focusses on the client, and delivering excellent service AND TBO does the same, that might give the company a fighting chance. Above all else, Buck management needs to learn to appreciate relationships, both with its clients and with its employees.

    Pros

I like the work environment and core values. The dedication and ethics of the employees working to meet the clients needs.

    Cons

There is zero work life balance, if your scheduled to work 150 hours a month, you will end up working between 200 to 300 hours on any given month.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is approachable and very focused.

I have been working at Buck Consultants full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The firm provides opportunities to learn and grow at every level. I enjoy working in such a collegial environment with smart, friendly, cooperative people.

    Cons

Buck hasn't been privately owned since 1997, but the last couple sets of owners have put enormous cost pressure on the business. They say they care about their employees, but they will have to put their money where their mouth is or no one will ever believe them. I am very encouraged by Buck's new president, Fraser Smart. He really cares about our people and, I believe, will fight very hard for us.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fraser Smart has such great enthusiasm and a positive outlook for Buck. The rest of the leadership team should take a lesson and become better cheerleaders for the business.
