Possibilities Lie with Others, Not with Whom You Think!

Manager (Former Employee)
Memphis, TN

I worked at Buckeye Technologies

ProsDespite a few bad actors, BKI has some very solid thinking in an industry where times are difficult almost all the time. John and a few people around him have the right thinking and that does help. With new focus on cash and lean, BKI has the tools to make good headway when times are at least better.

ConsWhile the right thinking is in place, execution of strategy follows an old style and is too slow. Too many people have a vested interest in the status quo and people who can really execute sometimes cannot. The internal politics despite the wishes are indeed overwhelming more solid results.

Union organized company that overworks the technicians and creates a hostile work environment.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Buckeye Technologies full-time

ProsIt is a fairly easy job if you can get along with the people. The hardest part is understanding that you can't make everyone happy.

ConsIt is a very hostile work environment with many irritable people. Technicians work seven consecutive work days with short breaks in-between shift rotations. They work several 12 hour days as well. Some technicians want the overtime, but they end up sleeping on the job and becoming irritable at work. Once a month, there is a five day break but it is cut short to adjust to a new shift. The technicians very well paid, but become miserable at their jobs and cannot attain comparable employment anywhere else in the county.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake control of your company. Management does not enforce the ruling contract. Furthermore, they bargain into a contract that is extremely beneficial the the union employees.

Good benefits, starting salary, small raises for strong performers, limited career growth opportunities

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Buckeye Technologies

ProsGood work life balance, easy access to executive leadership, very friendly and laid back atmosphere, job security, competent senior leadership.

ConsLimited career growth opportunities overall, poor raises for strong performers, overall these are the two that stick out, overall good company to work for.

Advice to Senior ManagementOffer better raises when the company performs well, particularly when the company is posting record earnings, give back to employees.

Prosthe people are the best and really care

Consvery heavy workload, need more mgmt hired, with so many extra duties it is hard to do all well

Advice to Senior Managementoffer incentives for healthy living and a gym onsite. would greatly help with out of hand healthcare costs for the many unhealthy workers there. Also need more shift employees, their overtime is too high and if the company truly cares about safety they need to get all overtime lowered...its way too high for the shift workers.
