    Pros

Safe area, close to great lunch places, a division of ITW, great co-workers, a good place to learn the ropes for the work world.

    Cons

Low pay, low raises, employee treatment varies by department/manager, employees kept in dark as to direction of the company, older employees who have valuable product knowledge not valued, headcount very low except in management, no procedures, minimal training, no growth opportunities unless on the fast track. Upper management surrounded by middle management that are yes people.

    Advice to Management

Talk to your employees and understand their roadblocks and daily obstacles that prevent job satisfaction. Be sure each department has procedures and process documentation. Be fair. Value the older employee. Revisit your standards for raises, try to keep up with with cost of living.

    Pros

    Clean Environment
    Friendly Co-Workers
    Reasonable Commute
    Small Company

    Cons

Senior & Line Management are Disconnected From Employees
Unfair Treatment from Senior Management (Especially from the New Human Resources Director)
    No Employee Recognition From Managers
    Poor Communication From Leadership Team
No Profit Sharing (Only Senior Management/Product Managers Receive Bonuses)
Each Employee Is Expected To Do Multiple Jobs
    Lack of Loyalty/Trust/Respect
Little to No Training/Developmental & Advancement Opportunities
Morale At An All Time Low
Most Come To Work Just To Get A Paycheck
    Outdated Systems

    Advice to Management

Instead of getting rid of the worker bees, try revamping/replacing the senior leadership team and some line managers. Replace them with individuals that care about the people and the success of the company. They are out of touch and appear to be in it for their own selfish reasons (greed). They are misusing and abusing their power. They don't appear to care about the people but only about themselves and their images. You have those that will step all over the next person just to make a name for him/herself.

  3. Illinois Tool Works (ITW) Has Destroyed Buehler Ltd!

    Pros

Nice building, good location. Metallography is a fascinating field of technical/scientific endeavor.

    Cons

Since the 2009 recession Buehler management, driven by Illinois Tool Works management, has eliminated virtually all long term employees who were good at their job and replaced some of them with low paid workers with no experience, or very limited experience in the field of metallography. Several excellent sales people have been terminated while others, who cannot even send out a product quote to an enquiring customer (one important customer asked 4 times for a quote, but never got one) are retained. Their laboratory staff has been decimated since the termination of one of the world's greatest experts in metallography in December 2009. Their marketing department now knows nothing about marketing and nothing about their products and the market they serve. Three people in upper management were fired starting in the Fall of 2010 who should have never been promoted or hired. They terminated the head of their European office in Dusseldorf who was a superb employee. He controlled their offices in Germany, England and France and all distributors to South Africa and Australia (except for China and japan). The ITW 80:20 rule is stupid and prevents sales growth. Buehler sales have fallen dramatically as a result. They have not introduced a successful, competitive new product in years. Buehler has also lost a number of their excellent, dealers worldwide.

    Advice to Management

It may be too late to restore Buehler as a competitive company. Illinois Tool Works has destroyed Buehler. They should sell Buehler to a decent company at a decent price. At one time, Buehler was the dominant metallography company in the US. Can Buehler recover? It will take a miracle.

    Pros

    Nice building, good parking
Some of the people are extremely competent and helpful

    Cons

Lots of management upheaval, department heads are kind of leaderless, which leads to lots of interdepartmental infighting - which leads to unhappy people - which leads to lots of turnover
(Trying to run company with co-CEO's, one at LB and one in Germany)
No real new machines in a long time - so sales are down
Much time spent training new people on archaic business systems

    Advice to Management

Actually practice what ITW preaches regarding 5S, In-Line, 80/20, new product design, etc.
    Don't lie to people

    Pros

It's an item company. Good location. Worldwide organization but midsize company.

    Cons

Not tons of promotion or growth opportunities. Wages are fair but not great.

    Advice to Management

upper managers should listen more to the employees. They have a lot to offer and aren't always look to for advice and experience.

    Pros

Since company became part of ITW all internal changes made have been very positive and much needed. Senior management replaced with ITW management, which was much needed. Great ITW toolbox applications integrated into company culturel. Good benefits, friendly co workers.

    Cons

You should like working for a large company to work at Buehler. Company prefers young, fresh out of school employees who will work for lower pay to obtain experience. Raises are not merit based but across the board percentage. No room for professional growth unless you are on the ITW fast track. Older employees not valued.

    Advice to Management

Should all have the same standards and rules to live by for employees. Pay standards should be raised to meet the scale of other companies in the area. Communication is key to keep employees happy.
