Fantastic Place To Work

IT-MIS (Current Employee)
Carlsbad, CA

I have been working at Buffini & Company full-time for less than a year

Pros- Excellent culture and people. Very enthusiastic and enriching environment. If you give some effort towards improving yourself, the culture here will reward that effort 10 fold.
- Plenty of PTO, flex time, etc. You're encouraged to take time outside of work for personal growth
- 8am - 5pm and rarely have to work overtime. Twenty minutes a day to read and plenty of breaks.
- Open door policy. You can walk into any of the exec's offices and talk to them. Brian B. himself comes out on the floor and chats with us. Definitely good for morale.
- Excellent communication with staff. If the company is doing well, you know it.
- Membership to PureFitness down the street....company pays everything but $20 which is nice considering it's around $65/month normally.
- Laid back and chill atmosphere. When people are interviewed they are mostly selected by demeanor, attitude, etc. You just don't get hyperactive, or pushy personalities here which is great.
- No longer near the beach but the new office is very nice.

Cons- Sometimes the over-enthusiastic atmosphere can get annoying (especially if you don't feel well or not in the mood for it)
- It's a small company - about 150 people or so. As a result, healthcare benefits for the employee are great but not so much for families with children.
- Not a whole lot of room for growth depending on department. People here are dug in to their positions. Not unusual to have people who have been here for more than 5-10 years. (speaks volumes for how great this company is)
- Some nepotism but it's to be expected - this is a family business for the most part.
- Pay is OK but below market depending on your role here. You do get performance bonuses but they are not always reliable due to the market.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep it up! Great atmosphere to work in. I love the people and culture of this company.

Great opportunities for personal growth, exhausting work

Business Coach (Former Employee)
Carlsbad, CA

I worked at Buffini & Company full-time for more than 5 years

ProsBeautiful location, easy to go surfing on your lunch break.
Promotes personal growth as well as professional performance.
Coaches have the opportunity to increase their salary by increasing their client volume, seniority is not required. Frequent performance numbers feedback.
Co-workers are positive and helpful.
A wonderful company mission to make a positive impact on others. Front line workers are genuine ambassadors for the company's mission and values.
Appreciative clients.
Leadership reacts or responds to workers, though some concerns of workers are not acknowledged.

401(k) matching, profit sharing, on-site gym, library, PTO

ConsDoes not seem that leadership leads in actions to practice what they preach.
Confusing and ever-changing metrics for pay; possible to increase or decrease 6 months salary by $10,000 or more.
Supervisors rarely give qualitative feedback and/or are not giving attention enough to notice.
Perceived lack of appropriate transparency between senior management and owner, with employees.
Mentally and emotionally exhausting work.
Little opportunities to advance professionally.
Very poor on-going training.
Nepotism.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe mission of the company and the delivery of it still positively impacts many people and their families. That is what maintains customer loyalty. The value to the employees can take the back seat. The practices of such companies like Costco and Trader Joe's to value their employees would make a positive impact to the bottom line of the company. But this company is still ahead of the curve in their office culture.

Keep growing as leaders! Don't lose touch with the company's values and those people who (have to) live it every day for the customers. Take advantage of the opportunities with communication technology.

Staying only in the comfort zone of the owner/CEO is frustrating the growth of the employees. There are ways to incorporate best practices from other companies. You must have people in leadership who have the permission and the ability to make that happen.
Working/being trained only in the dogma of what Mr. Buffini teaches is frustrating, baffling, and has some incongruity. Mr. Buffini has a narrow view about what coaching is, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. He sets the parameters on what he wants the company to offer clients. If the market/clients/the frontline people say differently, there needs to be some dialogue. Maybe some small acknowledgement of what the employees are saying would help a lot.

Clique where younger individuals are favored

Please Someone Tell the Owner What IS Going On!!!! (Former Employee)
Carlsbad, CA

I worked at Buffini & Company

ProsGreat workout facility, building, high level tools avail to everyone and responsive to get you what you need.

Many nice people who are not in management

ConsBad behavior is condoned for select favorites of supervisors, HR can't seem to do anything about it....co. will look the other way and allow individuals to mistreat others.

Some management appear threatened by those with more experience, successful backgrounds, etc.....and will find a way to remove them - usually harsh and sudden.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe advice is actually to the owner: "Take a hard, deep look into what your management has been doing - - as they preach servant leadership but allow employees to do the opposite when it fits their personal needs."

Don't drink the Kool-Aide - appearances can be deceiving.

Business Coach (Former Employee)
Carlsbad, CA

I worked at Buffini & Company

ProsThere is some useful information to be learned but don't drink the Kool-Aide. They have some good tools and concepts they have developed but learn them and from day one begin to look for somewhere else to apply these tools.

Cons"Stephford Wifes" environment where everyone is watching and reporting on each other. The corporate culture is touted as being employee friendly and client friendly. Senior management is in over their heads. It is a white collar sweat shop where all the metrics are applied in such a way that the business coaches are always just a few clients away from bonuses and or being laid off. As in most businesses the Golden Rule applies, thems with the gold rule. Do Not trust anyone.

Advice to Senior ManagementPractice what you preach as it relates to managing your employees. Take a hard look at your Master Coaches and hire or promote some people who have some true people management experience. Stop all of the spying on employees. Open up the dialog with employees and be HONEST, i.e. stop misleading your employees. No one can be trusted in your organization. Diversify your client base into other industries. Actually create a best practices discipline around business coaching instead of just being a pumping then dumping real estate operation. Take a hard look in the mirror with the help of an independent outside consultant who gets paid first before they tell you the truth.
