I worked at Bupa International full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I worked at Bupa House for 3 years and it's definitely a place where I can say that they take good care of their staff. I built some fantastic relationships with some very bright people at all levels, and the people at the top are exceptionally talented yet approachable. Generally everyone enjoys working together there and there is a brilliant social scene, plus a number of pro bono initiatives and in-house clubs. There can be some tough hours but they understand the need for a work-life balance and in particular accommodate working mothers most admirably. The canteen and in-house gym aren't bad perks either. You will make hundreds of useful contacts working there and I've made some lifelong friends - there are so many great people.

    Cons

Bupa effectively operates as a FTSE 100 company which means that there are some egos there, particularly at the "middle management" level. Most people there want to get along but because of a few very vociferous and very arrogant individuals there can be cases of exteme "silo-isation" where people who like a power trip deliberately don't co-operate; and teams are large which means that true talent can get lost, particularly if you are of an introverted disposition. They also love hiring in a bunch of consultants when they're missing a trick not letting people in the business lead projects.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't let people who know how to "talk the talk" pull the wool over your eyes! Just because someone likes the sound of their own voice and can speak confidently doesn't mean they actually know what they're talking about. This applies to the consultants who I don't believe add much value, and some internal egos too.

I have been working at Bupa International part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

It is a safe place to work and everybody works as a team which is so difficult to find this atmosphere somewhere else. All mandatory training is provided which is the best for the workers.

    Cons

So often it is challenging to work in such place as the residents some are mentally sick so with the training provided from Bupa there is nothing hard to deal with this type of challenging behaviour.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Personally i think there should a change in the rate per hour as really it is hard to work so hard all day and in returns we are not paid the proper amount of money i think there should be an assessment with the carers.

I have been working at Bupa International full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good people, good team environment, career growth and development opportunities

    Cons

Work life balance and flexibility for working mothers, which although a benefit that Bupa promotes, is not available in all teams and is dependent on discretion of manager

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If a benefit is available, it shouldnt come down to manager discretion, it really should be consistent across teams.

    Pros

    Nice atmosphere
    Expanding company
Not expected to work long hours

    Cons

Below average salaries and poor progression opportunities.
    Group reporting poor.
Projects seemed to be done 'on the cheap' which usually worked out more costly in the end and massively eroded my confidence in the company.
Fitness/running shoved down your neck at every opportunity.

I have been working at Bupa International

    Pros

Colleagues working together to achieve something extraordinary. Always a new challenge in a market that is complex, ever changing, socially critical and fascinating.

    Cons

Few people know how good it really is. We go under the radar because we are not a Plc and don't have shareholders, so you always have to explain.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to listen to employees - we've run global employee feedback processes since the early 1990's and participation continues to be incredibly high at 83%!
