Help wealthy people live longer - not very rewarding and treated like you're subhuman in the process.

Operations (Former Employee)
Brighton, England (UK)

I worked at Bupa International full-time for more than 3 years

ProsVery good opportunities for career progression if you enjoy moving laterally.

Fantastic development opportunities although never have enough time or support to pursue them.

The staff are amazing - great people with a great work ethic and a good social scene.

There's a healthy "no blame" culture, but communication is incredibly poor between departments so this idea of "no blame" soon gets forgotten when things do (and they do) go wrong (and very wrong.)

There's a subsidised canteen.

Good location for commuters.

ConsThe team leaders and middle management. There are a few excellent managers, but you are very lucky if you end up working for one.

Rather than list everything out, I can confirm that none of the cons listed in the previous reviews dating back to 2009 have been improved upon, or in fact addressed in any way. The managerial focus is one of self preservation and career progression, with the needs of the staff members being treated with complete insouciance. It is difficult to believe that you are working for a health insurer sometimes.

If you have left university and yet to find a job in your chosen field, or if you're at a crossroads in your life, or even if you're just looking for a place to work to pay the bills until something better comes along, then you can do no better than working at Bupa International. If you have drive and ambition then it would be more beneficial for you to seek employment elsewhere.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe upper management are totally unaware of the conditions and pressures the staff have to work under. The company values which underpin everything Bupa International is meant to stand for are not adhered to on a daily basis so their relevance in infinitesimal. They must take a more proactive approach as currently, the word 'mockery,' is not too strong a word to use when it comes to describing how their ideals are being promoted by the lower managerial ranks.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Great Employer with a focus on Employee Engagement & Personal Development

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Brighton, England (UK)

I have been working at Bupa International

ProsThe organisation provies a decent salary and benefits for an out of london employer. There is great scope for movement within the organisation and they are very supportive of lateral moves across departments as well as promotions. There is also lots of scope for transfers into other Bupa businesses aswell. As an example, a weekly email is sent to all employees advertising all jobs globally.

There is a strong focus on personal development - Bupa International has many great training programmes for front line staff, managers as well as Talent and Senior Development Programmes. There is an inhouse team dedicated to delivering training across the business.

The head office location is fantastic - right next to Brighton station. The offices are well equipped and the facilities are modern.

ConsCar parking is almost non existant and with brighton parking being expensive this can be an added cost if you are a local. The train is the best transport because the office is 2 mins walk from the station.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to involve and engage the business to enable everyone to contribute to the success of the organisation. The Good to Great initiative started amazingly.... continue to keep the momentum

If you're looking at retiring in a company, this is it. If you're looking to advance your career, go away.

IT (Current Employee)

I have been working at Bupa International

ProsMost of the employees are very nice and friendly, excluding most of the managers;
Work culture is relaxed;
Very women and family friendly

ConsFavoritism, contractors can be employed for years;
Corporate culture of hiding issues;
Lot of resistance to change;
No real decision making until the choices run out

Advice to Senior ManagementDecrease false enthusiasm, which doesn't fool anyone;
Too much hiding of issues and very little transparency;
Staff find out what should be internal announcements by reading the newspapers;
What's the point of giving useless gifts like notepads for P1

The worst place to work

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Bupa International

ProsIs international becoming global .... but not multicultural enviroment at all

ConsTha HR policies. Just british style...

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have to be careful hiring CEO´s abroad UK... the headhunter who deal the process could be not the best one ... but, up to you I left the company 2 years ago an I´m more than happy for that

Acceptable employer for first level entry into workforce or last level fill in. Poor for career development.

Customer Service Agent (Former Employee)
Brighton, England (UK)

I worked at Bupa International

Pros-25 days annual leave, higher than average for England
- Medical insurance benefit

Cons-Poor management especially at mid and lower levels.
- Daily working experience for Ops teams purely dependent upon manager, which on occasions can be very low quality. This is a criticism of BUPA since some of these managers manage to hold on to their position with poor people management, for years.
-As can be with companies of longevity, set in ways, difficult to enact change.

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove company training of management, especially in relation to people management. Good people management brings out the best people performance.
