    Good Place to work

    Field Service Technician (Former Employee)
    San Diego, CA

ProsFamily atmosphere and they care about their employees. Industry leader in the areas where they have branches

ConsLong hours for service technicians in the last quarter of the year. Limited upward mobility for service staff.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo what your doing. It is a good place to work. If anyrthing find a way to raise the ceiling for the Service technicians. No upward movement is a hard pill to swallow when you are ready to get off the road.

    Smoke and Mirrors

    Sales (Former Employee)

ProsVery little supervision. Company covers gas, travel, and entertainment with expense account. Auto allowance or provided vehicle.

ConsExtremely deceptive. They'll make a lot of promises in order to get you on board, but then they will be extremely vague and evasive when it comes time to deliver. There is a lot of chatter in the company about elevated morals and practices which seems admirable at first glance. But it's just a mantra to mask shady practices and a culture of dishonesty. Don't put yourself in a position where these people have the power to affect your livelihood.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart practicing success integrity instead of preaching it to other companies. Hold your managers accountable. Serve your employees and clients as well as you expect to be served.

    Amazing company with exceptional leadership

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Tacoma, WA

ProsBurkhart is a family and employee-owned company who really values and cares for their employees and clients. They care about the people and it shows in everything they do.

The previous poster who talked about the dental benefits must have been gone for awhile because they're really good now.

ConsBeing a smaller company, people have to wear a lot of hats. Sometimes the managers seem overworked.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep on the path you're on. Lori is an outstanding leader who has the company's best interests at heart.

    Great Company, Great Owner

    Technology Sales Specialist (Former Employee)
    Portland, OR

ProsGreat company, great benefits and compensation, great work-life balance, great team members. Car allowance, iphone, computer. Great values and culture.

ConsPortland market account base is very saturated. It will require a lot of cold calling on non-Burkhart accounts.

My experience at Burkhart has been equal parts learning from and contributing to a top-drawer company.

    (Current Employee)
    Tacoma, WA

ProsThe company is exactly who they say they are, and leadership walks their talk. They are literally a pillar in the dental community, well respected by the industry. Values: loyalty, acting with integrity and in their clients' best interests.

ConsIt is hard to get fired from Burkhart. Big ship to turn.

Burkhark has always been and always will be a family atmosphere with upper management who genuinely care about you.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Tacoma, WA

    ProsExcellent benifits.
    Lots of PTO.
    Flexible working hours.
Burkhart will give you the tools needed to succeed at you job.
It is not uncommon to see employees who have worked for Burkhart for more than 20 years.
Commuting to Tacoma is much easier the most other locations on the Pacific Northwest.
Burkhart is debt free and make a nice profit every year.

ConsSalaries are in line with working in the Tacoma, which is significantly less then salaries in the Seattle area.
Communication between middle management and employees could be better.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue on the path they currently are on. Burkhart is well respected in the dental industry by there competitors and dental offices alike. They have done well weeding out negative attitudes while praising and nourishing positive attitudes.

OK place to work with decent benefits

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Tacoma, WA

ProsNot too bad of a commute and the employees all get along pretty good. It seems there is a lot of good food all the time.

ConsThe company is changing from a small family business atmosphere to a larger impersonal type company. Too much food will make you fat.

Started out a good company but newer upper management is changing that in a negative way.

    (Former Employee)

ProsThere are some good people there in the trenches and like someone else said, a lot of food going around so make sure your willpower is strong. Benefits are so-so and you would think a company in the Dental industry would have better dental coverage but they don't. Pay is decent but not "top drawer" even for Tacoma. Most of all it's the good people doing the work that made it an OK place to work but those people seem to be leaving lately. Historically Burkhart has been very loyal to their employees but that has now changed and it is more "big corporation"-like now.

ConsThe middle management used to be the strength of Burkhart but now the company is really run by one upper management person and not in a positive way. There are still some good middle managers there but they are are just figureheads now. They used to pay bonuses but it seems now they are dumping a ton of money into a new computer system that doesn't seem to be able to work correctly and isn't even running the company yet which may be a good thing! So no bonuses for quite a while and the bonuses are the excuse given for lower salary at least in the area I worked in.

The top person tries hard to keep the "family" in the business but the level directly below is pushing in the opposite direction and the employee's "feel" it to the point of low morale. Between the "lay-offs" of good long time employee's to some employee's leaving on their own, Burkhart has turned the corner and become a less than desirable place for those that have helped build the company to where it is today.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe President needs to take a long hard look at why the company keeps spending good money after bad bringing the profitability of the company down. Sometimes it's best to take a hard look at the people right below you that you have publicly declared your "trust" in. Also, barging forward on projects that seem to have nothing but problems should raise red flags.
