A high-quality company with great principles but a tough value proposition.

    Pros

The people at Corporate are mostly really high quality. I like how buttoned-up and organized operations generally are. Burkhart has really stuck to it's values over time in terms of focusing on the higher-quality products and a holistic approach to improving their clients' dental practices. Definitely a family business feel, which I like, especially at HQ in Tacoma. The Supply Savings Guarantee really works, and it's magical when a dentist just clicks and gets why Burkhart is different.

    Cons

At the end of the day it's retail sales of mostly commodity products to customers who seem wired to look for bargains. The winners in those scenarios are mostly going to be Burkhart's big competitors Patterson and Schein. I also think management has been too timid in enforcing high standards and holding people accountable. This isn't the highest-paying business, and it's hard to get new people up to speed quickly, but bad attitudes have been allowed to pollute the air for others.

    Advice to Management

Enforce high standards. Recognize and reward those who smile while doing the hard work. Don't allow bad attitudes even from AMs and techs who have been around a long time.

    Pros

The family feel is great and most people really care about their jobs and the company. A lot of people have been there a long time which is both good and bad. The people are really nice and they do a lot of fun things like potlucks and contests.

    Cons

The company hasn't changed in years. It's very hard to get anything done unless you're part of the in crowd. Projects fail and no one is held accountable for them. The culture is different depending on who your manager is.

    Advice to Management

Please try to save Burkhart. It could be such a great company but it won't be until things are fixed and we stop losing talented people. Keep the clients in mind first.

    Pros

Solid industry. Nice clients. Corporate office seems real tight and fun. Good benefits. They truly care about their employees.

    Cons

Change is very slow. Too many people not trying to grow and support the business. Our area does not have a team effort or experience.

    Advice to Management

Doing an excellent job overall. Don't be afraid to move and shake it up a bit. Change is good for everyone.

    Pros

Burkhart has such a legacy of outstanding customer focus, it carefully evaluates its options and executes well, all the while paying attention to smart economic impacts. Very close community, solid leadership with realistic vision.

    Cons

Benefits were surprisingly expensive for what you get... Good opportunity around profit sharing and performance bonus could offset this cost. Field Sales process inconsistencies create an opportunity to close the gap with competitors and enable better performance measurement.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great communication and continue the investments in the future. Take a look at positioning benefits as an employment differentiator.

    Pros

Very little supervision. Company covers gas, travel, and entertainment with expense account. Auto allowance or provided vehicle.

    Cons

Extremely deceptive. They'll make a lot of promises in order to get you on board, but then they will be extremely vague and evasive when it comes time to deliver. There is a lot of chatter in the company about elevated morals and practices which seems admirable at first glance. But it's just a mantra to mask shady practices and a culture of dishonesty. Don't put yourself in a position where these people have the power to affect your livelihood.

    Advice to Management

Start practicing success integrity instead of preaching it to other companies. Hold your managers accountable. Serve your employees and clients as well as you expect to be served.

    Pros

Family atmosphere and they care about their employees. Industry leader in the areas where they have branches

    Cons

Long hours for service technicians in the last quarter of the year. Limited upward mobility for service staff.

    Advice to Management

Do what your doing. It is a good place to work. If anyrthing find a way to raise the ceiling for the Service technicians. No upward movement is a hard pill to swallow when you are ready to get off the road.
