I worked at Burns and Roe as an intern

    Pros

    1. Friendly colleagues
    2. Work environment seems that of a conservative engineering company
    3. The more/better you work, you get paid more

    Cons

It seemed to depend to a some degree of government regulations and market conditions because the company deals a lot with power plants.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I do not have any advice to management.

I have been working at Burns and Roe full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Company offers a summer schedule year long. That means half say on Fridays, and work 9 hours Minday to Thursday.

    Cons

Processes, procedures, management are all outdated.

Management do not value human resource especially for younger generation. It provides no training or career development for young people. So there is an extremely high turn over rate for young smart people.

Promotions are not merit based contrary to what it claims. Higher level people only cares about themselves.

Management has no vision for the company. Company is going nowhere but downhill.

There is a lot of politics that most of the time have a negative impact to the company.

There are quite a few people that are quite bitter and this makes the working environment very unpleasant.

The company just became a part of Power Engineers, the results of this merger has yet to be seen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start with a vision and stop micromanagement.

Start developing and investing in your workforce. This will improve the quality and abilities as seen by clients.

I worked at Burns and Roe full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

slightly above market compensation, benefits at market with exception of 401(k) which has no match. With Vanguard, so it is a good plan even when only your own money going in. Good people to work with, small enough that you can know almost everyone.

    Cons

stagnet, not breaking into new markets and old markets are frozen. Much competition so hard to win jobs that make much money. Keep doing the tried and true, even when it isn't working. Some voices for doing things differently, but they get taken out by RIF's or simply ignored. Have cut support staff to bare bones and have unqualified people doing some non-engineering tasks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get in new blood, with new ideas and break out of your comfort zone.

I worked at Burns and Roe full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Possible Field Assignments, Chance to learn new Engineering Software, Good for Graduate students looking to work closely with Professors employed at Company

    Cons

Where to begin- Compensation is very low, Projects are often unwanted leftovers of Engineering companies who do well in Nuclear Engineering, Field Assignments are severely mismanaged, lot of Nepotism in the company. Where to Finish- They were company responsible for Three Mile Island, if that doesn't say enough, what does?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retire, fold company, allow worthwhile employees to be merged into Engineering firm that knows what they are doing on Nuclear Projects.
