Great place to work

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
London, England (UK)

I have been working at Buro Happold

ProsCommitted and engaged staff, interesting work (depending on discipline), reasonable overall morale, acceptable senior management, partnership structure, skills are valued, cool high-end projects.

ConsCan suffer from poor internal knowledge transfer and fragmentation between offices, can be overly concerned with strategy at the expense of nurturing value.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore real down-to-earth leadership, less strategic waffle. Too many layers of management, so good ideas are not heard or shared.

Good company, opportunity to work on international projects but a bit old fashioned in other areas.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Dubai (United Arab Emirates)

I have been working at Buro Happold

ProsGood company overall, good reputation and leadership especially from the new CEO.
Great pool of engineers, knowlegde and interesting projects.
There are plenty of opportunities to work on international projects and also to live abroad either via the secondment programme or permanently.

ConsToo UK centric, a bit late and slow in several key emerging countries at embracing the global shift to the East.
The Dubai office atmosphere feels like a school library making it hard to interact and socialise amongst employees.
The Days are offen too long and the extra hours in the evenings and weekends are seen as the norm by some managers and are unrewarding.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore training for engineers. More flexible work options and having a more fun environment to make the office a more enjoyable and productive place.

ProsComfortable working enviroment. Good Colleagues

ConsSalary is very low. The appraisals are not transparent & biased. Don't recognise the value of employees who have served for long. Not worth a place to work for long time.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to recognise value of employees.

Disappointing. Company only see the penny's not the people. Ted Happold would be disapointted too.

Structural Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at Buro Happold

ProsInternational Projects. Salary is in top 75% of similar employers. Good Library.

ConsRuthless company that hires and fires on a dime, with no thought for employees affected. Very disoragnaised. Expects work to be completed to rediculuous deadlines in a rushed manner.

Advice to Senior ManagementRuthless comapany that has its favourites, if you arent in the inner cliche - you are going nowhere. As a former employee I would be happy for this organization to go bust.

Excellent place to work, great people and projects

Senior Engineer (Current Employee)
Bath, England (UK)

I have been working at Buro Happold

ProsBuro Happold is full of excellent creative and innovative people and gives you access to plenty of challenging and really interesting projects.
Allows people to get international experience through its secondment programme

ConsThe salary is quite low and the company benefits limited
There is not a lot of integration beween different departments
The communication from the top management could improve.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey should improve their communications. The previous CEO was better than the current on that aspect.

It has given me international exposure in different cultures but has failed to live up to my expectations

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Buro Happold

ProsInternational projects, good reputation in the community.

ConsPoor compensation packages, lack of appreciation for good work by senior management. Promotions handed out based on relationships with senior management rather than based on performance.

Needs decisive leadership and properly aligned incentives

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Buro Happold

Pros1. Good colleagues
2. Diverse set of colleagues

ConsNo relationship between performance/behaviour and incentives
Mediocre work output - lots of rhetoric, not reflected in work output
Indecisive mediocre leadership
Ambition to be global, but almost no diversity in leadership - gender, race, ethnicity or geography
Hard for women to be successful
Limited client base and geography of work
Uncompetitive compensations
Talk and meet a lot, do very little
Siloed groups with little collaboration

Advice to Senior ManagementGet real decisive leadership - change much of the top leadership, perhaps even bring in some external leaders on to the board to lead the major groups and geographies.
Get your incentives right and align to performance/behaviours
Focus, focus, focus, you don't have to try to do everything and achieve nothing.
