I have been working at BuroHappold full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Amazing projects. Strong History. Still well regarded in the market.

    Cons

The senior partners and directors fight like feudal kings. Positive co-operation and culture is much talked about but rarely lived. Full of clever individuals who talk a good game but only feed their own self interest. I was deeply unhappy at Buro Happold.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employ an outsider (preferably a non-engineer) to run the firm. Create some governance for decision making. Decide on the strategy and direction and allow individuals the space to meet the objectives. Manage performance.

I have been working at BuroHappold full-time

    Pros

More opportunities to work on iconic projects although they are getting less. Colleagues are generally nice.

    Cons

Senior management is poor and getting worse and worse. Basically everyone works on their own without support. Salary is relatively low. Promotion is not always fair.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees and get appreciation on how hard they are working and how much pressure they are taking. Please try to improve business / project management.

I have been working at BuroHappold full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Work with very talented people and have some great projects.
A good team spirit despite recent hardships.
There are some very inspiring partners and directors.
Get to work in very stylish offices in good locations.

    Cons

Below average salary and lots of dead wood at the top.
The support structures and staff are of poor quality in comparison to the technical staff and services.
Too many non work winners/ fee earners to support.
    Poor promotion opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If somone is employed as a director or above they should be winning work and paying for themselves, thnot relying on the techincal staff to support them with their work wining efforts.

    I worked at BuroHappold full-time

    Pros

Full of clever people who have sincere motivations and aspirations.

    Cons

They will tell you all about how it was founded by a Quaker and how ethical they are. They are not. There is an excess of arrogance and insecurity, to the detriment of staff, business and the bottom line. Some senior partners are loose canons and no one seems to care how much this damages the business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop thinking you know everything. Stop invoking Ted Happold when he would no longer recognise the company he founded, or the behaviour it engages in now. Control your partners before they sink the ship, if it's not already too late.

I worked at BuroHappold as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A friendly environment with an understanding that contract staff are not a miserable underclass of overpaid 'bums on seats' but can actually add value to projects.

    Cons

Mid-level management are not always up to the task of running projects. This realizes as late delivery of incomplete information which tarnishes the name of a truly great company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A more effective peer review process of project leaders would go a long way to upholding the BH name.

I have been working at BuroHappold

    Pros

Committed and engaged staff, interesting work (depending on discipline), reasonable overall morale, acceptable senior management, partnership structure, skills are valued, cool high-end projects.

    Cons

Can suffer from poor internal knowledge transfer and fragmentation between offices, can be overly concerned with strategy at the expense of nurturing value.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More real down-to-earth leadership, less strategic waffle. Too many layers of management, so good ideas are not heard or shared.

"Young" company, dynamic, prestigious, good people working there.

Complicated management style. Discrepancies between European and American offices on promotions and recognition of employees.

I have been working at BuroHappold

    Pros

Good company overall, good reputation and leadership especially from the new CEO.
Great pool of engineers, knowlegde and interesting projects.
There are plenty of opportunities to work on international projects and also to live abroad either via the secondment programme or permanently.

    Cons

Too UK centric, a bit late and slow in several key emerging countries at embracing the global shift to the East.
The Dubai office atmosphere feels like a school library making it hard to interact and socialise amongst employees.
The Days are offen too long and the extra hours in the evenings and weekends are seen as the norm by some managers and are unrewarding.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More training for engineers. More flexible work options and having a more fun environment to make the office a more enjoyable and productive place.
