Current Employee – been working at Burt Hill
Pros – Strong design and work
Good growth opportunities
Lots of mentors; positive attitudes
BIM leader; great training; good people who get everyone on board
Good benefits
Good training
Cons – Current leaders did NOT do THEIR job and line up successors. So they sold out and took the easy way. Now the company is gone. Very disappointing.
Advice to Senior Management – You blew it guys! Now we all need to go find a new employer. Maybe Stantec wasn't what you thought or maybe you were staring at your bank accounts. Very sad ending to 74 years of making a difference.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

Former Employee – worked at Burt Hill
Pros – the office is in a great location. there are good benefits offered. the office itself is a very pleasant work environment
Cons – sometimes with a larger, more corporate firm you get pigeonholed into one type of task and is harder to move up. professionalism must be kept at allll times.

Former Employee – worked at Burt Hill
Pros – Burt Hill prides itself on being large and progressive/knowledgeable. They have some OK benefits, and they care a lot about decor.
Cons – Although Burt Hill prides itself on being large and progressive/knowledgeable, it is really not open to innovation, or to the ideas of any but those at the very top. Burt Hill supposes it is on the cutting edge of sustainable architectural design, but actually it is just very average. The same goes for the little bit of site planning that they do. Their AE mentality is very unimaginative and since their massive layoffs, they no longer have any of the creative types that once made it somewhat interesting during the boom. The company is based in Butler, PA, which is a backwards, suburban area - and this mentality pervades the company culture. Burt Hill's busiest offices are the Butler PA and the Cleveland office - which provides one with an idea of how interesting and creative the company really is. Unless you are desperate for work, don't work for Burt Hill, as you will just be a peon with no future - management will make sure of that.
Advice to Senior Management – The management at Burt Hill is really the worst I have ever experienced, in any type of job, in my entire life. You never know where you stand with them. Don't even bother to ask if you have done the right thing, as you will only find out when it is wrong.

Former Employee – worked at Burt Hill
Pros – It's a very nice group of people, throughout the office. Easy to make friends with almost anyone there.
Cons – It's a very big firm, and feels that way sometimes. Even though the people are all friendly and nice, personal relationships staff-to-management are somewhat limited, leaving staff vulnerable to stress (about layoffs when things are slow, and about how to get all the work done when things are up) -- there is no even-keel time.
Advice to Senior Management – Management needs to slow down and take more time with the staff to get a real sense of how things are going at the ground level. Staff are somewhat fearful of the hierarchy, and it hurts morale.

Current Employee – been working at Burt Hill
Pros – friendly place, able to grow
Cons – Burt Hill now a Stantec company, just watching the change
Advice to Senior Management – you mean Stantec leadership, taking a wait and see approach

Former Employee – worked at Burt Hill
Pros – Before the economic recession, the company had obtained many very talented and visionary people whom were a joy to work with.
The complexity of the projects maintained your interest and made you WANT to come to work.
The pay and benefits package were very competitive.
Was able to advance and gain elevated levels of responsibility in a very short time.
Cons – Management....Management...Management.
You had several people whom had relocated from Pittsburgh to run the office in Dubai, who then inturn grew the company ten fold and thought it was from there business acumen and architecture expertise. In essence all they did was ride the wave that Dubai was and their fall and bad planning proves it. Many employees were treated very badly with no respect, especially those not from the US. The great managers and employees that they did have, either left or were never fully utilized.
Advice to Senior Management – Most of the management that had helped grow the company and destroy it, were all fired. The mid-level management whom actually did all the work and provided good direction are now helping lead the company. The new management is most certaintly aware of the wrongs in the past and I believe will do what is needed to right the ship.

Current Employee – been working at Burt Hill
Pros – Environment allowing staff at many levels to take risks. Some reward associated, though more intrinsic than extrinsic.
Cons – Little oversight and quality control. Flat - democratic organization generally a good thing, but here it has been taken too far with little enforcement of focused strategic vision from the top.

Former Employee – worked at Burt Hill
Pros – Great People! I really appreciated the culture at BH. Met some very good people there, still friends with many of them
Cons – Upper management are totally out of touch. Their global management approach is laughable. Stick to Pittsburgh guys.
Advice to Senior Management – None, they are beyond help. Small town mentality convinced that they can manage a global company because they got lucky during the boom years in Dubai.
