Great consultants, poor management all around

BI Consultant (Former Employee)
Scottsdale, AZ

I worked at Business & Decision SA full-time for more than 3 years

Pros- BND has a great reputation with Microsoft, so you'll have the opportunity for some very good exposure.
- Work with talented people
- Work flexibility

Cons- Upper management is -extremely- shady. They overbill clients, force you onto projects they know are death marches for profitability.
- Extremely poor project management business unit (extremely inexperienced PMO in Scottsdale).
- Performance evaluations are pretty non existent.
- Lots of politics in the office
- Almost all Senior Consultants are forced to take on additional roles in the name of "personal growth" and "management positions", truth be told the promotions are granted politically, and forcing additional roles are simply setting you up for failure.
- Untechnical managers in manager roles
- Encouraged to cheat on certifications.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou hire extremely talented people, why not treat them so they'll enjoy working for you?

Good people, but poor services portfolio management

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Wayne, PA

I worked at Business & Decision SA

ProsThe dedication of the employee base at B&D is admirable and there are pockets of industry-credible capabilities.

ConsPoor strategic guidance and collaborative planning amongst a multitude of separately-run practices (both in the US and abroad). Doing too many things sub-optimally and not enough time spent on the better-performing areas.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on the "con" above.

4. Spies on you and your social activities
5. You and your job is always insecure

Advice to Senior ManagementKindly care about employee and his well being also and do not CHEAT people by making false promises.

This is for B&D Gurgaon(GDC), pathetic company to work for !

Senior Consultant (Current Employee)
Gurgaon, Haryana (India)

I have been working at Business & Decision SA full-time for more than a year

ProsSmall company, people know each and located at a decent place in Gurgaon

ConsList is endless, here are few which top the list:
1. 18 months of service bond against 25% CTS irrespective of your experience. Employee is CHEATED as he is informed about bond only on day of joining.
2. 3 months of notice period even during probation period(of 6 months)
3. Company can fire you with or WITHOUT cause with a notice of 1 week.

Advice to Senior ManagementI sincerely hope management in other countries at B&D does not BULLY employees way they are bullied in India by MD/GM. Please listen to employee problems and have transparent global policies.

Exciting new direction for the North America company communicated by executive management for 2013.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Business & Decision SA full-time

ProsB&D is focusing on creating career opportunities for it's employees and breaking down the barriers of practices and collaborate more to share knowledge and expertise across the organization. The company is moving from a business unit centric model to a customer delivery centric focusing on long term relationships with clients to becoming an extension of their team.

ConsI don't have many cons about the company, it is apparent that in today's economy everyone in B&D is working very hard to succeed and move the company forward and in the right direction while looking out for it's most valued asset - the employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo spend more time directly communicating with employees and continue to open the lines of communication.

Good place to work for junior and mid levels. Company with very strong potential if integrated and managed better.

Senior Executive (Current Employee)

I have been working at Business & Decision SA

Pros- Superior competencies, quality of talent and work. High profile clients and projects despite smaller size and scale of regional units.

- Flexible, close knit work culture and flat hierarchy in individual offices. Retains small company advantages despite mid-sized profile globally. Multinational and truly diverse company due to global reach with self owned offices.

- Good career progression in lower and mid levels.

- Low attrition globally.

Cons- Bureaucratic and slow progression at higher levels. Lack of grooming. Higher performing talent not leveraged well.

- Textbook case of a conglomerate of smaller businesses acquired over time that have not been integrated well to effectively leverage strengths and assets. Unhealthy competition and politics amongst regional leadership. Managing founders unable to fix this and drive a unified vision.

- Leadership in Europe, North America unable to get out of their prior small company mold and as a result challenged to effectively direct and compete in a marketplace dominated by big consulting with greater scale, sophisticated integrated delivery and price arbitrage.

- High rates reflective of superior quality of talent but not market conditions, resulting in a fair amount of lost bids due to price rather than capability.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus first on integrating the global organization with common vision, culture, standards and ability to operate as one. Drive this yourself rather than delegate. Company is small enough to have a personal influence at the grass-roots. Eliminate barriers and mindsets esp. amongst old guard. Identify and support key talent required to move to the next level. Learn from established business models and best practices of the fast growing competition.
