Former Employee - Fund Accountant  in  Waterloo, ON (Canada)
Former Employee - Fund Accountant in Waterloo, ON (Canada)

I worked at Butterfield Fulcrum full-time for less than a year

    Pros

-Opportunity to learning in depth functions of OTC & derivative products
-Casual dress code: jeans, t-shirts, shorts allowed
    -Free drinks and coffee
    -Free parking

    Cons

-Mid and upper management have unrealistic expectations, efforts rarely recognized. Learning curve is extremely steep
-Long hours expected frequently, nights and weekends not uncommon during audit and month-end periods
-Supervisors have no leadership, don't know how to delegate, and provide no feedback: team does whatever it wants and most come in very late
-Duties and expectations per colleague are not clear
-No coaching or personal development provided whatsoever (yearly objectives are just a formality)
-No procedures in place, thus training is very minimal and sometimes inadequate
-Thin staff and no cross training: loss of very important knowledge and experience creates high stress and unmanageable workloads during vacation periods or if he/she resigns
-Poor IT support: In my experience it took about 2 months to be properly set up with up to date equipment - Very unacceptable!
-Benefits given only after 3 month probationary period
-Salary is poor for the amount of hours worked. No bonuses paid out since 2008.
-Employees paid only once a month
-Work is monotonous, long, and tedious. If you don't know how to create Excel Macros, you're at a huge disadvantage
    -Awful broker reports and support
-Team is overworked and thus no team spirit. Sink or swim mentality. Crucial knowledge kept by each individual. Most members cannot help out because they are too busy or just don't know the accounts/procedures.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn how to take the control of the team and stop dumping work on new employees while other senior employees take 2 hour lunches. Hire more staff and create procedures. Provide strategic coaching sessions for each employee as required. Take time to hire and train staff properly to ensure proper development . Be clear on providing each team member of what's expected of them. If a member is not performing, take time to see the reasons why and address the issues...No need to make hasty uninformed decisions. Get organized and be proactive, especially during crunch times.

I have been working at Butterfield Fulcrum full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

End to end NAV process. Hands on experience on various kinds of fund of funds, mutual funds, hedge funds, etc.

    Cons

Transparency levels are not commendable. Frequent changes in the private equity firms holding stakes in Butterfield Fulcrum leads to changes in management policy and creates uncertainty.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more transparent and stick to what you have promised as wavering on promises made is not a healthy sign of professional management.

I have been working at Butterfield Fulcrum

    Pros

The company is a good place to work and this is due to the people working there, not so much the top management.

    Cons

The top management is sending contradictory massages, they need to improve the way how changes are communicated to the staff.
