Good place to learn about business & technology.

Programmer Analyst (Former Employee) Eden Prairie, MN

ProsI had a great boss, and good opportunity to learn about different divisions of the company. There are rewarding technology projects to work on in the IT department.

ConsSometimes IT management is a little bureaucratic and makes you jump through unnecessary hoops.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet more casual with your dress code, if people can earn stickers to wear jeans and a Vikings sweatshirt on any day the stricter dress code doesn't matter for the rest of us.

Great culture, great people to work with. IT department is very politically charged.

IT Supervisor (Current Employee) Eden Prairie, MN

ProsMonetary benefits are good. Additional benefits are some of the best in the business. Has a great culture to work in over all.

ConsUpper level leadership can be very political, and can make it difficult to work with or understand top priorities. New IT building is nice, but the open concept means things get very loud. Very few paid holidays.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe company is very diverse and aggressive. This makes unifying IT's objectives very challenging. Leadership needs to provide a strong unified plan to provide IT with a better sense of direction.

Great Company, great people, no work/life balance

Transportation Sales (Current Employee) Eden Prairie, MN

ProsThe people and the culture. C.H. Robinson has a unique culture that encourages teamwork, collaboration, and a "work hard, play hard" attitude.

ConsThe structure of the company does not encourage a work/life balance. 10 hour days and weekend/holiday hours are required. Compensation does not reflect the amount of work needed to be successful in the job.

Advice to Senior ManagementDevelop your employees, encourage professional and personal growth. Recognize and address talent.

    Fast-pace, little reward

Account Manager (Former Employee) Eden Prairie, MN

ProsFun culture, fast-paced environment, access to big projects, good 401k.

ConsWork-life balance, bonuses. Each branch is decentralized so managers have the ability to divvy up profit and they determine bonus payouts (enriching themselves by starving the AM's busting their butts everyday).

Advice to Senior ManagementReward the people that are doing the hard work and making you money. Don't just take it all for yourself.

    Good but could be better

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Eden Prairie, MN

ProsLots of resources, global opportunities, many different career paths, charitable events, great people to work with, it is a nice entry level job

ConsLow wages, there's a lot of secrecy with management and many ideas are not discussed., management structure seems trivial and in title only. Individual performance not valued anywhere near as much as overall branch profits

Advice to Senior ManagementI could work hard and develop great business but if the branch doesn't hit our numbers it doesn't matter. Value your employees

    What a joke!

Transportation Sales Representative (Former Employee) Eden Prairie, MN

ProsYoung workforce, very cool people (usually) to work with. I'd say don't accept a job there unless you're desperate.

ConsAbility to move up is difficult, they force you to eat lunch at your desk (really?!), work 10 hours/day (without paid overtime) and also MAKE you come in on Saturdays! They live on hiring recent college grads with no experience, and make you work super hard for low $30k/year and know it will be a revolving door- and are totally fine with it. Don't buy in to their "bonus" program either. It's all smoke in the mirrors- they'll make you PAY MONEY BACK if your branch doesn't meet its growth standard.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is no work-life balance. Good luck changing management. They are a huge profitable company but will let 5-20yr talent walk out the door without blinking an eye. Stop ripping off carriers, and pretending that you are their livelihood. You have cornered a piece of the market and just rip them off and put people out of business. You just cry & complain when you get in a pinch and actually pay fair market value for a service. Quite ridiculous.

Great for some, but not all

Account Manager (Current Employee) Eden Prairie, MN

ProsLarge company, very secure. Can eventually lead to very good pay. Pay is decent for those just starting out. Satisfactory vacation and benefits packages. Days go by VERY quickly- very little down time or boredom. Can be rewarding work (sometimes) when a goal is reached. Good place to learn and get work experience, fun people for the most part to work with. Management is like most places: there will be some good and some bad. I do feel like my personal managers do care about their employees and want them to succeed and be happy at work.

ConsCan also be very unrewarding at times: talking to less than desirable people (carriers, some other CHR reps) all day, lying/feeling unethical (sometimes lying is the only way to get a job done), being hounded by those with unreachable expectations (many customers). If you want to elevate within the company, take a number. It will likely be a long waiting game that is often based upon time instead of merit. Lots of in-fighting between CHR branches. Other branches will often be your biggest enemy as opposed to CHR competitors or any other outside factors. When other reviewers say that there is a bad work/life balance, take it seriously. It does consume your existence. Plan on a 40 hour week only if you take Friday off. Plan on some weekends as well. Very complicated pay structure. People (especially management) seem very secretive about compensation. Questions about future earning potential seem to be frowned upon and not encouraged to be asked. Everybody is asked to buy into the "trust that it will pay off in the end" philosophy. Very high turnover at CHR. The internal operating system (Navisphere) is frustrating- very unreliable and is constantly making life more difficult for CHR employees. Dealing with Navisphere crashing and running slowly is a daily problem that surely leaks immeasurable amounts of lost revenue.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo what you can to improve work/life. CHR is a place where hard work and long hours are expected, but the good employees often get burn out and move on within 1-3 years. Invest time, people and money to what you can to improve the internal operating system. Do what you can (impossible to solve completely) to try to improve relations between branches.

Work Hard Play Hard BUT NOT WORTH IT

Transportation Sales Representative (Former Employee) Eden Prairie, MN

ProsThe company attracts young energetic and ambitious employees that are fun to work with
Most branches encourage happy hours and reward reaching sales goals with fun branch outings
A good place to start your career as most entry level positions will teach you a wide range of useful skills

ConsBe prepared to work 60-70 hours a week and mandatory Saturdays once a month
At first the fast paced work environment is challenging and fun but you will get burnt out relatively quickly once you realize that you're not compensated adequately for all of your hard work, long hours and relationships you're managing
Your GM will sell you the dream and make it seem attainable but don't be fooled, to be successful at CH you have to make it your LIFE. Be prepared for a horrendous work life balance
You have to work at CH for 5+ years to gain any sort of professional respect, trust and independence from management and your supervisors

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunicate with your hires and encourage them to be open if they're feeling overworked or to stressed. Put in more measures to retain great talent that gets burnt out. Offer more tangible opportunities for advancement and discuss those opportunities with your employees. Keep up the happy hours and outings as rewards and opportunities for employees to bond.
