    Exciting

    Office (Current Employee)
    Keene, NH

ProsC&S is definitely a fast-paced environment, but if that excites you, you'll do great. I left a boring 9-5 job to come here, and I couldn't be happier. The people are smart, dedicated, and fun. Because it's a private company, there isn't a lot of bureaucracy. It's a great place for people who like to get things done.

ConsIf you're not the best at what you do, or if you're not willing to learn to be the best, then C&S might not be for you.

    It's Not Worth It

    Associate Merchandising Analyst (Current Employee)
    Keene, NH

ProsThey are a growing business and are generally good about giving raises every year. The company as a whole donates a lot to charities. There is a free clinic with some free prescriptions.

ConsThe company values are very archaic. They have begun to give laptops to full-time employees and told that you should "consider" taking it home every night. They do not believe in working from home even if it a blizzard outside their philosophy is if you are not at work you are not working. Life-Work balance in non-existent and it is hard to transfer teams or raise in your position.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind ways to acknowledge your employees. Having more than 5 paid holiday days would be nice and not ridiculing those that take the days before or after would be a nice perk.

    Frustrating

    Buyer (Former Employee)
    Keene, NH

ProsInteresting business, and C&S seems to excel in it. When I was there the employment seemed reliable and the business was growing, which was pretty remarkable in the economic conditions at the time.

ConsUnsatisfying and repetitive job with little chance for advancement. Poor training and little autonomy. The buying department had high turnover.

    Gives fast-paced a new definition.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Keene, NH

ProsFeels like a flat organization (engagement with senior/executive level management is a regular part of most employee's days); lateral movement is fairly easy, and often encouraged; there is never a shortage of things to do; health clinic available to employees and their families; great place to "pay your dues" and learn how to work in a VERY fast paced environment, with constantly changing priorities

ConsApproach to most problems is brute force (A LOT of manual business process); some business practices (because it's a private company) feel shady; professional development is frequently cast aside in order to meet the demands of the day

Advice to Senior ManagementDevelop less reactive attitudes to the problems on today and shift focus to the potential issues in the future.

Takes advantage of hard-working employees with low salaries due to limited other employment options in area.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Keene, NH

ProsFor an area with very limited options, C&S offers a relatively secure job. If you keep your head down and do your job, you can rely on being there a long time.

ConsBecause there are limited options in the Keene area, C&S takes advantage of good, hard-working, talented people by asking for more and more work without compensating them fairly for the work they do. Employee moral is currently very low, people are unhappy and frustrated, and many good employees are looking for work elsewhere.

C&S continues to promote upper-management (Directors, VPs, Sr VPs) including pay increases and bonuses, while leaving the people who do the day to day work with little to no salary increases or room for professional growth. "Raises" in 2013 were not even enough to account for a cost of living increase, much less the increase in health insurance cost that most employees had to cover.

They also continue to eliminate positions and either not fill them, or bring in high-cost contractors to fill the roles. They are not building an environment where people can grow in their careers.

Advice to Senior ManagementRecognize your star employees with more than words. People need to be passionate about their jobs, but the reality is that people work because they need the paycheck.

Stop firing employees and bringing in contractors to replace them.

Stop telling people they're doing a great job, but give no raise to compensate them appropriately for their hard work (while paying for 20+ employees to go to PA and stay overnight to build a playground). Pay people the going market rate for the work they do; C&S salaries for most positions fall $10-$20K short!

Stop filling the company ranks with expensive upper management. Use your dollars to reward your core of hard workers with higher salaries, give them more responsibility (which they ask for and are not given) and bring in lower cost admins to take over the day-to-day tasks.

    long time employee

    Transportation Supervisor (Current Employee)
    Keene, NH

ProsC&S has grown considerably since I first started with them and many of the long time employees have seen their careers progress substantially over the years. I think their benefits package is comparable to those in most large companies.

ConsIf you have issues working longer hours this may not be the best match for you.

    Great company to work for

    Intern (Current Employee)
    Keene, NH

ProsThey provided great benefits (housed me as an intern) and had a great workplace environment. They also paid for transportation costs very generously. The management team worked very hard to ensure that the employees were treated well.

ConsHeadquarters are located in the middle of no where (Keene, NH) but there are things to do if you try hard enough to find them

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep doing what you're doing!

Work Hard, Play Hard - Have Fun in the Process

    Assistant (Current Employee)
    Keene, NH

ProsIt's a work hard - play hard environment when you drive your own career growth.
Very approachable executives - many have an open-door policy
    Community Involvement/Outreach is very active!
It's very family-friendly and a community in the office - everyone says hi to each other!
The CEO is very open with his employees about the business, his goals and the health of the company - you feel very privy.

ConsThe fast-pace isn't for everyone and some assume career growth will be handed to them.
The company (and industry) naturally goes through fluxes in business which can be challenging, I think it just keeps things interesting - NEVER a boring day!

A great launching pad or in between job

    IT Administrator (Former Employee)
    Keene, NH

Pros- Exposure to newer technology, competitive/fast-past work environment.
    - Opportunities for personal growth in a team environment which is otherwise hard to find in this small community.
    - Entry level to senior level positions in nearly every department.
    - Became friends with many like-minded people at the company.

Cons- 24/7 company, with 24/7 on-call responsibilities for many corporate positions.
    - Disregard of tenure when new senior management is brought on (~5 year cycles in nearly all departments).
    - Low moral in many of the departments due to the dog-eat-dog mentality of the culture.
    - Bureaucracy is practically never-ending.

Advice to Senior ManagementGood luck. If you can't handle the hectic/dynamic environment, be prepared to sink or swim.
