Former Employee – worked at CA Technologies full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Great people, better than average benefits, great place to learn new skills. I was hired for one position, and eventually after six months posted into another. For three years I had a terrific manager who really worked with me.
Cons – Too many reorgs, layoffs. Very little succession planning, career growth. Management didn't know what to do with my function, so I floundered.
Advice to Senior Management – Stop reorging!!

Current Employee – been working at CA Technologies full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – -One of the largest SW companies in the world
-Large customer base with steady revenue stream, profitable in good and bad economies
-Lots of opportunity for those early in their careers
-Making a investment in listening to employees and cultural change
-New CEO committed to drive growth and make big changes
Cons – -Single digit growth, flat stock price
-Limited career growth options for senior people
-Constant change
-Inconsistent management performance and style
-Three CEOs in 5 years
-New CEO has not (yet) delivered impactful change
-Stabilization of mature products for existing markets conflict with defining new markets with disruptive innovation
Advice to Senior Management – -Set clear performance and behavioral goals for all levels of management, measure with 360 review feedback, and move quickly for those that rank at the bottom.
-Stop trying to be both a value and growth company, pick one or separate into 2 entities.

Current Employee – been working at CA Technologies as an intern for less than a year
Pros – it was a really nice environment and the manager as well as the boss never push you. they were also very kind to help you with your questions.
Cons – You need to sign the timesheet which is where I was not satisfied. I dont know how to make a minimun 20 words of cons but I think it was 80% very good.
Advice to Senior Management – thank you CA.

Current Employee – been working at CA Technologies full-time for more than a year
Pros – CA Technologies prides itself in giving its employees work life balance. They have a work from home program that many people take advantage of - most teams are scattered throughout the country, and sometimes even world, so the members of the teams work from home and meet via conference call and screen sharing applications such as Webex or LiveMeeting. Even those that do not work from home everyday are often allotted particular days on which they can work from home, or a lot flexibility with their schedule.
Cons – Due to changes at C-Level occurring 'often', there is also often changes in executive management due to C-Levels bringing in executives they trust from previous companies or changing to others within CA that they trust. From there, changes take place within personnel due to the new strategies Executive Management decides to implement. Every other year there are major layoffs, and you are often just waiting around to see if you get a meeting invite from HR (which means don't set up any meetings for tomorrow, you won't be working here tomorrow). Also, there is no clear career path for anyone at CA. Often times you can only be promoted if your boss leaves, or if miraculously a new organization is created.
Advice to Senior Management – Take time to sit down and really plan career paths for the different levels of employees within the company. Clearly communicate what you see your employees contributions are to the company, and where you see there strengths might be able to take them in their next career move - be it within or outside of CA Technologies.

Current Employee – been working at CA Technologies full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – Great benefits, mostly nice/professional/dedicated people, flexible work hours/locations (virtual) depending on job function, great technology in some areas
Cons – Political, management/process heavy, disconnect between stated strategy and organizational cultural transformation goals, bureaucratic, low energy, 'yes man' culture, no career movement unless politically aligned at the right levels, constant reorgs, ambivalent customers, talent bleed
Advice to Senior Management – Good luck - you know what the problems are, now fix them!

Former Employee – worked at CA Technologies full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Big company with some stability and ok benefits - to advance you have to know the right people and use your elbows
Cons – Poor management, extremely poor culture and constant changes. I left CA in 2012, during my time there I had 2-4 managers per year. The culture is built into the walls, the HR group is a joke. Unless you love server software - there are much better companies out there

Current Employee – been working at CA Technologies full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Interesting work, great people, fantastic life work balance. Occasional great managers, but there's always...
Cons – Change, change, change. I had a great manager for a few years but then change happened and the latest team is among the worst management I've ever dealt with.
Advice to Senior Management – Look back at your Culture initiatives and the whole idea of "Respect for people". There;s not a lot of that coming from upper management these days. There are some fantastically smart people working there who are getting treated like interchangeable paper dolls.

Pros – There has been a change in leadership with Mike Gregoire coming over from Taleo. While it is still early on, the general Belief is that there will be a seismic shift in how CA is run and the company will be much better for it.
Salary is good and benefits (I do not utilize but have been told) are very good compared to the industry.
As with any job, a lot depends on your manager - and at CA, there is a chance you will have a lot. Over the course of 2 years, I have had 2 different jobs and 4 managers - 3 of which have been fantastic.
Culture largely depends on the office, which I have had both a so so experience at one and a great one at another. My peers and some management are truly great individuals, which I think is a big plus as to who CA looks to hire. They have had issues with
Cons – Since there is so much change going on (which can be a con) it is hard to accurately predict how things will be in the near future. One thing that will change is the levels of management - there are managers of managers of managers and it can be very tedious to get answers and direction at time. Again, this will change and has already begun to.
Reorganization...this will hopefully be something that will change as well, but there is constant change and while change is good, when people are constantly wondering what they will be doing at the end of each year, it dramatically effects the beginning of the year. An employee with 15 years at CA described it best, "I have had 15 one year contracts at CA". This has hurt the culture as there are rampant rumors that spread and has created a negative element in the office. **Again, the feeling is that the new Exec leadership will change this for the better**
Speaking from a sales standpoint, there is a lot of change needing to happen. Turnover is an issue and that is mostly because the approach in some areas is to discount the heck out of a deal for an 3-5 year agreement. It hurts the value of the product (and future negotiations) and also leads to reps skipping out as they will not make any money off the customer for 3-5 years (and with 4 or 5 accounts each, that doesn't help). In the past year, I have seen approximately 20 reps in my area quit...customers have even said that they don't bother to remember names since CA is a revolving door.
Advice to Senior Management – Walk the talk - 14,000 as one is a great motto, but a lot of people who believe in the company, do not get treated that way. You invest heavily in bringing on great employees - don't hang them out to dry as a result of constant re-org.
Manage out some of the old guard at top (and middle) - sometimes I feel that management is still stuck in the 80s with certain philosophies. When I started at CA, I was told by a colleague who had just left CA that it was a good company in its prime, but it has been slowly dying ever since - I think this is not unique to CA, but that needs to change.
(For Sales) Look more towards long term growth rather than immediate impact - both for the customers and for the sales force. Some competitors are entrenched in accounts since they have had the customer for over 10 years.

Current Employee – been working at CA Technologies full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – I work with some of the greatest, nicest, smartest people I've ever met.
Cons – I work for the opposite.
Advice to Senior Management – You need to take a weed-wacker to the VPs in this company. Seriously, I've never seen so many people who look out for #1 more than this line of folks. Look REALLY hard at marketing. Your CMO is cool. However, the majority of folks one- to two-rungs down the ladder couldn't market a hotdog to a hungry rottweiler. Ask what their priorities are. Then ask for the plan of attack. Yeah, good luck with that.
