    I worked at CAMH

    Pros

Flexibility, working in an environment where education, compassion and intelligence are encouraged. Some of the best human beings on the plant work for CAMH and I was proud to be a member of this organization. The work CAMH does has meaning and influence on a daily basis. This is an organization which surpasses the standards it sets for itself, and provides a level of care not matched anywhere else in mental health. CAMH is simply an extraordinary organization with wonderful clients and employees.

    Cons

Oscassional vicarious traumas, shift work, lack of advancement unless you complete a significant level of education (e.g. If you have not completed a PhD your opportunities can be limited in certian fields).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shift work can challenging. Sometimes there is a lack of work/life balance as a result of the stresses of departmental demands. Other than that keep doing what you are doing. This is the best company I have ever worked for and I miss being a CAMHer.

I worked at CAMH as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

    - very helpful supervisors, learned a lot
    - nice and friendly culture. People there actually do treat you as a co-worker, rather than a student
    - very exciting work opportunities, and they recognize you for your hard work.

    Cons

    - may be a little dangerous working on the unit floors.

  5.

Overall a positive experience but it really depends on where you are given the number of departments

I worked at CAMH as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

The union seemed helpful. The work is interesting if you care about mental health. The new facilities are great and most of the people are passionate about what they do.

    Cons

Management and the entire system takes advantage of students and contract workers. Most people on contracts are not notified of renewal until very late in the contract. I get that a lot of it depends on funding but the system takes advantage of students and contract workers to an unfair degree.

I worked at CAMH full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Relevant exposure to research agenda in mental health, good benefits and compensation, flexible with scheduling.

    Cons

Not paying attention in detail about employer-employee relationship, limited personal growth, work-life balance towards work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve interpersonal skills on department and program heads.

I worked at CAMH (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Work-life balance was very good - only very rarely did I take work home with me. Office culture will vary by your department, but was collaborative and supportive with respect to everyone I worked with. Benefits and salary are both pretty good.

    Cons

May not be too much room to advance. Quite a lot of variety in work quality, which may be a problem if you really want to always do the best job possible.

I have been working at CAMH as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay, benefits, colleagues are nice.

    Cons

    - Leadership is overly political, disorganized, non-transparent, untrustworthy, disloyal.
    - They shorten and then extend contracts for people, making it apparent that they have no idea what they are doing.
    - Great deal of cronyism - they invent new jobs when nothing is posted just to bring their friends in.
    - Leadership feels like a highschool clique. They have no connection with the real mission of camh, which is to help those with mental illness and addictions. They are more concerned about their own advancement and egos.
    - No opportunities for learning or self improvement.
    - Very poor distribution of work - leaving people with nothing to do for weeks, while other people are completely stressed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Go get a job on Bay street!
