Current Employee – been working at CAMICO full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – Management is highly supportive of employees while challenging them to stretch and grow. Oftentimes if a position does not work out for an employee, the company while find another position within the company that's a better fit for the employee.
Cons – CAMICO runs as efficiently as possible, reducing as much waste as possible, meaning that sometimes employees become over-extended in their workloads. However, management recognizes that and supports employees with more time and resources to finish their work.
Advice to Senior Management – Help employees avoid becoming over-extended in their work.

Pros – The employees are friendly and easy to work with. It is a small company which means that you might be doing several different jobs. You can get a lot of experience here. You can generally get time off when you need it and the company doesn't give you a hard time about taking the time off.
Cons – Too many layers of management. There are supervisors, managers, directors, vice presidents, executive vice presidents and a president. The majority of the highest people have almost no insurance experience except for working at this one company. They don’t seem like they have the basic concept of insurance down and it doesn’t appear that they have ever taken an insurance class. Their decisions are more along the lines of a small business than that of a national insurance player.
Very disorganized and a lot of work is last minute and urgent. Workers stay late but most of management leaves on time.
There is a lot of distrust with higher management as the published employee surveys don’t seem to coincide with what employees have claimed they wrote. Surveys are reviewed by the HR department head and then released.
Recently the company has lost a lot of experienced people and they haven’t been replaced by knowledgeable individuals. This makes it harder for us that are left behind.
To get promoted or recognized in this organization you have to be a member of the club. Many of those promoted do not have the skills necessary to do the job. They seem to get promoted based on how much they agree with what is being said. People that have good ideas but don’t agree with management seem like they get blacklisted.
It also appears that the board of directors is more of a rubber stamp than an entity that is suppose to guide and direct.
Advice to Senior Management – Find some people that are experienced in running an insurance company rather than individuals that are more concerned about keeping their little kingdoms intact.

Pros – The company is a niche player that provide great benefits. There is no company in its market space that offers what CAMICO does. There are great benefits for policyholders and employees. It is a good place to learn how a service company should operate. It is small enough that someone beginning in insurance can establish the importance of servicing the client.
Cons – For a small company, it has too much hierarchy in the decision making process. There are cylos that oprate in the company. Communication among the different departments is non existent. This lack of communmication leads to miscommunication to the public. That makes it easier for competitors to market against the company. The view of the company ends up something negative even though the employees and management team are doing all they can to make things work.
Advice to Senior Management – Keep it simple and accept that the company is small. It can be an advantage against your competitors. The thing that makes CAMICO great is that it is a small company that offers BIG value to its policyholders. Not everyone will buy it, but those that do will continue to do so because they understand what the company stands for.
