I worked at CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences) full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

As the top research institute, CAS is an ideal place for people who work around science and engineering aspects, Any sophisticated measurement devices are accessible and the academic speech can always invite the big images in certain fields. You can work with the most smart researchers, technicians and graduate students. The government financial support also guarantees a fair salary package.

    Cons

Don't be involved too much with official meetings and outreaches. Most time it's a waste of time for a researcher. Also ready to deal with different people, some may be weird-tempered.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Narrow the financial state among different departments and disciplines.

I worked at CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences) full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

nice place, good funding, good academy background if you want a further academic career (compared to other places WITHIN CHINA ONLY).

    Cons

boring, small campus, nothing at all, except lab. there is not even a canteen, let alone other things. Most of all, I had a terrible-terrible-terrible former boss there. Mean, cheap, lying, got drunk and smashed things, swore words in front of everyone. I quit after a year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

they will not hear at all. what's the point.

I worked at CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences) as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Learning things, do experiment. It is a quite delightful time to be there to finish my undergraduate project.

    Cons

Sometimes I have to work till the night, but it is quite often for very laboratory. And I do not have salary, so feel a little sad.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The leader of the team should be a good example to their teammates. The boss sometimes will leave early or late to lab.

I have been working at CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences) full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - Looks good on resume
    - Get wined and dined on misappropriated research funds
    - Students are pretty great

    Cons

    - Bosses are not too knowledgable
    - Mostly focused on building relationships (guanxi) rather than doing good research
    - No lab safely or waste management—regularly pour toxic chemicals and heavy metals down the sink
    - Bosses always want you to know they are the boss and you are far beneath them

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - China still has a long way to go in terms of scientific research. The only way they are starting to overcome the west is by sheer volume and master—slave relationships with subordinates. The prevalence of guanxi is also subverting the peer review process in the scientific community and bastardizing the science community.

I have been working at CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences) full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    relative good institute for doctoral study in China;
research funding is better than some university, while much less than Tsinghua U or Peiking U

    Cons

people are all busy writing applications for fundings, proposals for money, it is all about money, money is never enough.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

you need to come into us for a better look, see how poorly our life is. or, per say, we have no life other than lab work.

I worked at CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences) full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

There are heaps of seminars on a wide range of research topics, from local, national or international speakers. It is a good way to find out what interests you most! There is also exposure to loads of technology you may use in the future research. You can learn some basic ones as well as the knowledge that more hi-tech approaches are available for further research. Senior researchers are always willing to provide training on methodology, lab skills, scientific writing and presentation.

    Cons

After hour work is always required. You may find it boring to repeat things again and again without positive outcome, which could turn down the passion on research sometimes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider it as a training more than a work. May need more advise on the time management and work-life balance skills.

The academy looks good, but very far from Guangzhou city.

I worked at CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences)

    Pros

The place was quiet. People there are very nice. The salary for an intern position is pretty good somehow. They provided accommodation and food. They provided shuttle buses to Guangzhou city everyday.

    Cons

The place was far away from Guangzhou. You need to take more than 1 hour from Guangzhou downtown to go there. And the facilities was limited. The cafeteria was not very good.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

He actually helped a lot and acted as a very good boss.
