Current Employee - Volunteer in Montgomery, AL

I have been working at CAVHS part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Assist America's Veterans and help them have a better experience at the VA hospital

    Cons

Realizing the physical and mental damage to US Veterans

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure employees understand that they work to serve those who served the nation. Some employees are dead weight...don't care and know they will not be fired...

All is not equal for all staff , nepotism rules the NLR campus. EEO is poor.

I have been working at CAVHS full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great way to serve those that have sacrificed much.

    Cons

Discrimination and nepotism is endemic in the LR and NLR VA facilities.
Mental health service SUD especially is poor and needs a re-vamp of management. If staff do not care they should not be in the field.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk to staff, listen to those that work closely with the veterans, eliminate complacency in mid-level management. Change up upper level mgmt for better insight into current conditions.

I have been working at CAVHS full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Faculty are skilled at connecting fellows with the broader research community. Ample opportunities to apply for junior investigator level grants. Grant funding rate is much higher in the VA than at NIH.

    Cons

VA restrictions on travel create obstacles to sharing your research and networking at professional conferences.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remove unnecessary barriers to travel for scientific conferences and trainings.
