I worked at CCTV as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

As a summer intern, I was given a lot of responsibility to develop content and ideas for the program I was working with. Smaller teams allow you to experiment in different capacities. Lots of feedback and room to learn from seasoned professionals in the journalism field. Perks: free Chinese classes, gym, roof top deck

    Cons

You won't be asked to work beyond your department without explicitly asking your boss.

I have been working at CCTV as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Good hours for an intern who still hasn't completed their undergrad yet. You usually work from 11-7, 4 days a week. Work is generally fun and exciting, you're able to go onto different shots, do voice overs, even have some face time on camera. My favorite part is that you get paid to attend a Chinese language class twice a week.

    Cons

As an intern who just graduated I was in an odd age range. I was almost too old to really hang out with the other interns (they all mostly had to go back to school) and I was too young to hang out with the producers.

Also, if you're living on your own in DC and have completed your undergraduate degree, minimum wage can be hard to survive off of if you aren't frugal.

I worked at CCTV part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great health benefits,,some nice work colleagues, central location and decent pay. The work itself is enjoyable and you get to pitch interesting stories.

    Cons

Very disorganized, illegally forcing workers to take days off/work unpaid, you get publicly humiliated if you mess up, efforts are made to help non-Asian colleagues understand Chinese culture but they couldn't care less about the reverse. Management is all ego and doesn't listen until something goes wrong.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Applying what works in China, doesn't work in the US. The management hierarchy creates a fear-filled environment that has employees crying in corners when they mess up. Half the staff is looking for a better job when the economy picks up. We feel unappreciated and not listened to.

    Pros

friendly associates at lower level, many Directors are full of ego and obnoxious

    Cons

Senior managers..Chinese managers do not have not a clue and how to manage in an American environment and have hired people poorly to fill the ranks. I hated my Director, all she did was bad mouth the managers who hired her as well as the people above and below her. RUN as fast as you can
