I have been working at CDC

    Pros

CDC is the public health leader and does very important work. CDC is staffed by some of the brightest in the field.
    -Great pay and benefits
    -great work/life balance

    Cons

    -Very bureaucratic
    -Slow to get things done
-Although, my team has great work/life balance options, those aren't offered to everyone. It's up to the supervisor, ultimately, so it really depends on the center in which you work.
-It's hard to grow and move between centers.
    -Very little accountability.
-Poor performers are rewarded by being moved to other teams. While the performers are stuck and can't move because their team needs them.
-People get mgmt positions/promotions not be cause they are qualified to lead or manage people. Advanced degrees do not make you qualified nor time at CDC.

I have been working at CDC

    Pros

    Great mission. Good people. Flexibility.

    Cons

    Limited skillset/leadership diversity in management.
Cincinnati buildings are a bit of embarrassment. Visitors have said to me "So you're just a small outpost. The real work is done where?"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more thought to how you procure your IT resources. There's a difference between contracting commodity positions such as data entry personnel versus filling information tech/informatics jobs.

I have been working at CDC

    Pros

Amazing mission, bright colleagues, rewarding work, flexibility, relatively decent work life balance for some.

    Cons

Rating system. Management at the Division Director level asks lower levels for program performance information that reflects your work to use in their review. Two layers up gets rewarded for your work while get mediocre ratings for your work. This is especially bad in the Chronic Disease Center. Infectious Diseases has rating practices that aren't as top down.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve the technology skills of the agency and use of technology to accomplish your mission. Rating system is ridiculous. The employee work life on staff psychologists have to deal with dedicated employees who get crushed when they put in 110% and it doesn't make a difference in their pay or rating. Fortunately for most - the people who stay care more about the mission.

    Pros

    -Leader in the field

-New agendas and budgets every year, with new presidents can be major
-Because cannot fire people, you can end up with unmotivated people (this of course always depends on where you end up)
