Having been working somewhere else for the last few months I really DONT miss CEB

    Senior Research Analyst (Current Employee)
    Arlington, VA

Pros-Some teams are awesome and have great sprit
    -Some good people
    -Great opportunity to learn

Cons-Pay is way too low. I received over a 20% salary increase with my move
-Theres so much negativity when it comes to performance reviews, which i believe stems from the nature of the job, which is finding faults in companies - management looks and emphasizes your faults - they then make these faults clear to the people you work with so that you'll have the opportunity to 'develop'. Its a bit obscure, because not all of those people care about your work so they latch onto what was said and basically regurgitate this in your next review
-Turnover is terrible, either everyone leaves or wants to leave, especially at the Analyst to Director level
-There is some really bad upper management, primarily at the SD and MD level - huge egos
-Lots of weekend work with no real goals

Advice to Senior Management-Increase pay rate
-Its not all about looking for the person that will develop the next big case (really, they're all very similar) instead promote those people who are smart, create a positive work environment and arent so negative. Stop favoring the people that complain and dont make these people managers.
-Dont make it mandatory to come in on weekends

Excellent focus on serving the community

    Sales Administrator (Current Employee)
    West Chester, PA

ProsEach employee is given 40 hours a year to spend in volunteer activity. One day per year the whole company at locations across the globe can be found serving together.

ConsMy subsidiary was sold off, so I had to move elsewhere. If not, I'd still be there

Great experience and exposure, but sometimes thankless

    Account Manager (Current Employee)
    Arlington, VA

Pros-The people at CEB are some of the best and brightest. There's respect across functions (research and revenue, etc.) and
-There is tremendous exposure to some top-notch companies and you are a trusted adviser to C-level executives. The experience is incredible.
-Over performers are recognized both at the team level and across the regional offices. They definitely reward the over performers with praise and recognition.
-The content that is created by the research team is incredible. Granted, it is from the members directly but the research team has the ability to unearth the issues and tell a story with the member voice. Some great work has been produced over my years at CEB and I truly respect the research teams. There is no question I wouldn't have been as successful as I have been at this job without those partnerships.

Cons-Career development is really lacking, especially if you are remote. Once you are at the Senior Director level, it is really difficult to advance. You have to over perform at an extreme amount over 2 years to be considered for the MD title.
-There seems to be disconnect on who upper management think should be leading regional teams and what the teams actually need.
-Sales is meant to be competitive, but there's almost so much competition within each practice, people aren't ever supportive or truly happy for those that succeed. Trips and rewards are based off of practices competing against each other and a select few people qualifying, meaning you could overperform in your practice but if 3 other people in your group did even better, you lose.
-The amount of institutions the AM role supports is unrealistic and we are not able to sell and serve at the capacity that would actually foster higher renewal rates and higher conversion rates for new business.
-Similar to what another person said, there's always a fire to be put out and always a metric you could be failing (basic metrics are expected but most often there are weekly updates with more metrics than one person could ever hit).

Advice to Senior ManagementReconnect with the people that are DOING the jobs. Give compliments once in a while. Pull back on the extensive metrics. There are incredible people in the revenue roles and a lot of good people are lost to poor management.

    Great place

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat place to work overall. Culture is very pro-growth and progressive for such a large company. I would recommend the company to anyone serious about consulting

ConsThe effectiveness of the behavioral interviewing approach is questionable. The interviewing technique really does force many candidates to make stuff up just to be able to answer the questions that HR force feeds the hiring managers.

    Great culture, lower pay

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Arlington, VA

ProsThe CEB culture is fantastic. For the most part, it's a really fun, smart, enthusiastic group of people. This was my first job out of college and have gained a ton of valuable experience that is definitely transferrable should I move on to another opportunity.

ConsThe compensation for more junior roles isn't great. It can also be a very competitive culture which some people are demotivated by.

Advice to Senior ManagementFor some roles there needs to be a mid-level opportunity between manager and director.

    Dont fall into the trap....

    Business Development Representative (Former Employee)
    Arlington, VA

ProsThe product is awesome. They put alot of time into developing best practices and passing them through to clients. If you are part of the "in group" you can get or do anything you want.
They give you formal training but it isnt very strong at all.

ConsIt is a super clicky culture. You are either part of the "in group" or not. If not, they do everything possible to make you fail.
Leadership has clear favorites and talk down other employers in the area to make you feel like you are part of this prestigious organization-- when in reality they are just afraid of more people leaving
They require you to come in early and stay late- they pay you overtime- but its not an option at all
During q4 you can barely leave your desk to go to the bathroom without your manager freaking out about where you went.
Promotion is through a panel process, and although they are improving it- the concept of advancement there is not what they tell you when you are interviewing. Very unrealistic expectations set.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat employees fairly and do not pick favorites. It felt like you made up your mind if you liked me before I started. Stop talking down other companies, and people that leave for other opportunities. Make time to train and coach your employees. SSPD does not teach you product knowledge.

Academic - Fast Paced - Great People

    Account Manager (Current Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsCLIENTS: Within CEB's Account Management organization you have the opportunity to speak with senior level executives from world-class companies about the challenges they face in their roles. Executives believe CEB can provide them with credible, insightful answers. There are only a few companies in the world where leading executives turn for this kind of advise and as an Account Manager, being the conduit of this perspective is a highly rewarding experience.

COLLEAGUES: You are surrounded by very intelligent, collaborative colleagues who are equally excited by the challenge of teaching executives at great companies something new. You won't find a nicer, more supportive sales organization.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT: Within Sales/Account Management you will learn how to: cold-call, communicate exceptionally well (written and verbal), diagnose complex business challenges, and position a solution to C-level executives. This experience is VERY valuable in the market. CEB has a reputation for developing the best talent in these areas.

ConsOPPORTUNITY: There are many leaders who are very tenured and have been in seat for some time. If you work within a regional office, the growth potential can be limited. Some tenured, high-performers have left for organizations with more opportunity for upward mobility.

PACE: The amount of work required to be a high-performer is not for everyone. There are long days and you sometimes sacrifice going home for the holidays. The "ramp time" (time from hire to when the business expects you to be performing) is very short.

Advice to Senior ManagementRetain the culture of curiosity, member impact and generosity. Focus more on understanding the needs of regional offices and local talent markets. Figure out how to open up career paths.

    A Great Place To Learn

    Business Development Associate (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

    ProsExcellent Training
    Good location for the office
They will give you many chances to succeed if they believe in you
    Competitive Compensation Package

ConsThis is a cold call sales job, that is not always clear in the interview process
The job can be very challenging especially when working with Sales Executives
In Days around Christmas (last year had to work on Christmas eve and the day after Christmas)
If you are not at your numbers you are made to feel very replaceable

Advice to Senior ManagementFear of losing your position is not a sufficient motivator for many people.
