I have been working at CENIC
Pros – Strong management at the top with real vision. Implementations using leading edge technology. Many opportunities to work on challenging projects with real benefit to the customers. Close knit culture, but welcoming to newcomers. Opportunities for all voices to be heard. Tools (desktops/laptops) that are provided are suitable at the individual level.
Cons – Being dependent on a necessarily limited number of equipment and infrastructure vendors can mean that vendor delays and errors often lead to difficulties in project implementation requiring additional effort on CENIC's behalf. Using the latest technology can mean difficulty in meeting project schedules because of confusion in implementation details. Vendors often aren't much help. Documentation is a challenge. Common tools such as email/calendaring/general collaborative infrastructure could be improved.
Advice to Senior Management – spend more time in the design phase for projects; systematize processes so there's less variability in implementation

I have been working at CENIC full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Very inexpensive health benefits for all. That's about it.
Cons – No growth opportunities while working on equipment that is 10 years behind the curve, but yet classified as complex and challenging.
There is a seemingly purposed "fear induced" environment that stifles creativity, and keeps the staff at status quo while being talked down to like Kindergarteners.
Advice to Senior Management – To actually advance in the technology arena, you need to hire experienced folks from outside "academia" where technology moves forward. Hiring from within the same limited bubble, and actually expecting new ideas and forward thinking just won't happen. Take a real serious look around, and it will become clear why very well experienced Engineers and Managers come, and then leave. Seriously, the "big cloud" idea of VoIP, and storage has been around for over a decade now. It's not new to anyone who has already lived it in the private sector...no matter how many hour long lectures of trying to spin it.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
