Great Company - Many More Pros Than Cons

I have been working at CENTRA (Massachusetts) full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of interesting contracts, excellent benefits, a true work-life balance, many opportunities for advancement IF YOU'RE A SELF-STARTER, and a small-company feel even though it's mid-sized. Not a lot of red tape or paperwork.

    Cons

If you most often work on client sites, it can be difficult to stay on management's radar, you have to make a point to push for things you want (e.g., new work opportunities), management is friendly but can be distant. Can be difficult when you're new because they don't have a great process for introducing new employees to the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better communication with employees as to what is going on in the company and what internal opportunities are available. Provide clear guidance on what is needed to move up in the company's ranks, and then provide opportunities to do so.

I have been working at CENTRA (Massachusetts) full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Liberal leave policy, can take leave and "pay it back" with overtime
    - Plenty of contracts with Homeland Security
    - Contract work is mostly offsite
    - If salary is negotiated correctly, compensation is handsomely

    Cons

    - No room for advancement for junior consultants
    - Little flexibility on contract placement after hire
    - Minority employees will feel out of place, and will be treated differently
    - Turnover is high among project managers
    - Employees are not confident about company's future
    - HR is not objective

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Provide avenues of advancement for junior employees
    - HR is insensitive and does not respect employee complaints
    - Minorities will feel alienated but are afraid to communicate with management out of fear for retribution

    Pros

Wide vareity of challenges; great people; with the right manager, there is no limit to your advancement potential.

    Cons

When you ask permission to do something at CENTRA, there are two answers you will never receive: "No," and "we have a procedure for that." This is not the place for people who need structure and hand-holding.
